An unexpected transformation
For almost two years Luffy and his Nakamas set off for Egghead Islandhome of Vegapunk, the world’s greatest scientist. But given the last few chapters, we may well have reached the end of this arc of discoveries and twists. After incessant attacks from a gigantic naval force, the coalition of pirates and giants finally seems to be able to set sail. One of the five elders finally managed to interrupt Vegapunk’s transmission
This new chapter picks up where the last one left off. Luffy’s crew has finally come together again and together they try to escape this war in which they are trapped. Along the way, one of the five Deans, Saint Ethan Baron V. NusjuroHe tries to burn down the pirates’ ship to prevent them from escaping. In the face of this, the giants try to push back the flames, but their strength is not enough. In a triumphant drum, Luffy then transforms into Gear 5 to ward off the winged monstrosity. Out of admiration for this form of Nika, in which the young girl never stopped believing, Bonney decides to imitate Luffy and use her age power to become… Nika.

…What disappoints some fans
An astonishing conclusion to a chapter that had the potential to divide the community. While some are pleasantly surprised by this turning point and appreciate the symbolism it represents, others find it harder to choose Eiichirō Oda, arguing that the uniqueness of Luffy’s Gear 5 is diluted by Bonney’s transformation. If the young girl can take on Nika’s appearance because of her age, maybe others can too?
However, many fans do not share this opinion at all. In their opinion, Bonney’s transformation would be justified, especially in view of his story. The young girl has believed in Nika all her life, the free and emancipatory God of the oppressed peoples. This faith, the daughter of a slave, allowed her to endure many trials throughout her twelve-year life. Therefore, it is reasonable for the Wolverine to gain confidence at the sight of Luffy in Gear 5 and, just as she transformed into a giant a few chapters earlier, May she also embody Nika’s freedom.
