Fall of Babylon It’s a video game that came out this year, actually more than two months ago. It was developed by PlatinumGames and distributed by the publisher of the hit Square Enix. If you haven’t heard of it until now (or if you forgot it exists), that’s totally fine, as it seems to be the case for most Steam users.
Babylon’s Fall doesn’t sell very well on any platform, but it’s especially bad on PC. On Steam, the game’s concurrent player count peaked at 1,166 players at launch and has been declining ever since. Typically, online action games average about 50-60 players per day.
However, last week – especially on Wednesday, May 4th – the concurrency spike dropped to just one. Only one person was online in the game at the time. VGC found this shocking new low, although you can see the Fall of Babylon has “recovered” since then – back to its usual average concurrency of around 60 – with only one player available from the main release It’s rare to find a game from just a few weeks ago, and a well-known developer is certainly rare.
All things considered, the current situation is not surprising. PlatinumGames had to reassure players shortly after the game’s release, promising to support at least two more seasons. The post’s headline is shocking and persuasive: “Is it dangerous to continue serving?”
The Fall of Babylon received particularly poor reviews from critics in the PlatinumGames project. The game’s always-on nature, the battle pass progression system, and its structure as a live service game with no satisfying hooks also seem to annoy players the wrong way.
