Jon Spector, Overwatch 2 Commercial head and vice president, who is leaving after six years at the developer.
Last week, Spector shared the news that he was stepping down from Blizzard after six years. “After an amazing 6 years, I have decided to hang up my sword and leave Blizzard at the end of March,” Spector wrote on his personal Twitter account. “Working on Overwatch has been the highlight of my career – Team 4 brings tremendous talent and passion to their work every day.”
He went on to thank everyone at Blizzard and the entire Overwatch community, noting that Overwatch 2 is under the loving care of his soon-to-be former colleagues, current game director Aaron Keller, and Jared Neuss, executive producer of the free-to-play shooter. “As a player, I can’t wait to see a lot of excitement in Overwatch. I’ve worked closely with the rest of the leadership team during this transition, and I know the franchise is in good hands hands [Keller], [Neuss], and the rest of the team. ”
Spector’s successor hasn’t been announced yet, but we’re halfway through March, so technically he’s still in that role for now.
Overwatch 2 appears to be doing fairly well for Activision Blizzard’s financial results, with the company reporting in February that the sequel “delivered the highest quarterly numbers in Overwatch history for player count and playtime.”
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the shooter, as the game recently had an official collaboration with the popular anime and manga One Punch Man. The collaboration features skins for various characters from the comics, with Doomfist clearly based on the One-Punch Man theme. Overwatch has never had a collaboration like this before, so we’ll have to wait and see if this pays off with the move to free-to-play.
