Overwatch 2 is set to launch next week with an animated miniseries, and it looks to be a prequel exploring the Omnic Crisis.
Since the first game’s release in 2016, Overwatch has released a plethora of animated shorts that explore the backstories of its many characters and occasionally touch on some of the larger story. But for the first time, Blizzard has released a 2D animated miniseries called Genesis – Part 1: Dawn, which will go into more detail about the major inciting event in the entire Overwatch world – the Omnic Crisis.

To quickly explain the Omnic Crisis, the world is basically a utopia, using omnics (artificial intelligence powered robots) to automate society and ensure global economic equality. As with many stories about AI-powered robots, they gain sentience and understandably rebel against their creators, sparking a major war known as the Omnic Crisis.
Whether the entire miniseries will go into Omnic Crisis is unclear, and the first episode will feature some familiar faces, including Reaper, Reinhardt, and Ana, who have all fought in the war. It looks like we’ll also meet the scientists who created the omnics and get the perspective of said omnics. There will be two more episodes after Dawn, so various stories in the Overwatch universe can be explored.
This upcoming mini-series isn’t the only way you’ll be able to experience the story in Overwatch 2 soon, as some story missions will be added to the game this August. For some confusing reason, you have to pay for them, but if you want more of the story within the game itself, then this is the place to go.
Genesis – Part 1: Dawn will premiere on July 6th on the official Play Overwatch YouTube account, which you can find a link to below.
