Payday 3 is coming. We’ve known that for quite a while, but we really don’t know any concrete information about the co-op shooter. In a new one Interview mit GamesIndustry Starbreeze CEO Tobias Sjögren chatted a bit about Payday 3, making no secret of how important the game is to the developer.
After the debacle surrounding The Walking Dead, Starbreeze has at least repositioned itself. Instead of operating too many things at once, you now only want to do one thing – and really do it. So 2023 is the year of Payday 3 according to Sjögren
Success is important but not guaranteed
Payday 3 and the success of the co-op shooter are correspondingly important. For this, they rely on a life service model, which worked wonderfully with the almost ten-year-old Payday 2 and to this day brings Starbreeze a portion of the income that should not be underestimated. The 2022 financial report implies that Payday 2 revenues have now surpassed the 50 million mark.
Of course, Starbreeze is now trying to build on this success, but Tobias Sjögren doesn’t see it as a guarantee. The Starbreeze CEO relies on advice from a former colleague with whom he previously worked on Battlefield 2 at DICE:
You’re never better than the next game you work on. That’s something I’ve carried with me ever since because it’s true. In this industry, you have only so much credit for your past accomplishments. Because that never changes what comes next. Whatever you do next is more important, and so is Payday 3.
What we know about Payday 3 so far…
… is not too much: Payday 3 should appear sometime in 2023, there is no specific release date. The game is already fully funded by publisher Plaion and is planned for a PC and console release. New York serves as the setting and the well-known bank robbers Dallas, Hoxton, Chains and Wolf return.

Die Payday-Serie: Starbreeze is also planning a Payday-based TV series alongside the new co-op shooter. Inspired by films like Heat, Scarface or Reservoir Dogs, the Payday series should follow in the footsteps of TV productions like The Last of Us or The Witcher.
