According to Grubb, he’s been hearing “for years” that “Perfect Darkness is in a rough state; it sounds like it’s in a very rough state,” he said. “And it doesn’t sound like it’s in any way Really come together. [the announcement] and [news of] Crystal Dynamics is coming on board to help solve this problem. “
Grubb added that the studio is considering offering perspectives other than first-person for the Perfect Dark series, which is known for its first-person shooters.

In early 2020, Alex listed Perfect Dark as one of the games that Microsoft should resurrect for the Xbox Series X. Little did we know that a new game in the series was in development – despite rumors and hints hinting at it over the years – that development began two years ago in 2018.
When it was finally announced at The Game Awards 2020, The Initiative said it was “aiming to create an agent thriller set in a near-future world” and set out to reimagine one of “the most popular IPs in gaming” A history. ” The news was welcomed by many, including Alex, who said he hopes the game doesn’t just feature Joanna as a super spy, but also maintains the campy alien theme of the original .
The following year, Crystal Dynamics was announced to be helping develop the game, and after years of prototyping, The Initiative was ready to start moving forward with production on Perfect Dark. Because the team wasn’t big enough (at least at the time), Microsoft hired Tomb Raider Studio to help keep things moving after the pandemic slowed development.
After a year of silence, a report in June 2023 stated that Perfect Dark’s development was bogged down by changing ideas and goals, and suffered setbacks due to changes in senior leadership and the departure of core designers. Reports also claim that the game could be two to three years away from release, and could even be an episodic adventure similar to Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Adding to the final point in today’s report, it appears nothing has changed over the past year. Hopefully the team working on Perfect Dark can resolve this issue soon.
