Following rumors about a possible delay of the PlayStation 5 Pro, one of the industry’s most renowned insiders has now taken a stand: When will the more powerful Sony console be released?
For many months now, there have been speculations and rumors about a more powerful Sony console in the form of the PlayStation 5 Pro – just as the company already built the PS4 Pro on the previous PS4. However, there is still no official confirmation and recently there was speculation online that the release could take even longer. The renowned insider Tom Henderson, who is well connected and usually well informed about the games industry, has now commented on the topic.
Previously, his tweet had sparked the emerging discussions about a possible postponement to 2025. In his statement, however, Henderson now wants the tweet in question to be understood as a “passive comment” and not as a statement that the PS5 Pro would miss its intended release target in the 2024 Christmas season or would even have been canceled completely.
Instead, nothing has changed in the facts known to him: developers can continue to submit their applications and games that support the specifications of the PlayStation 5 Pro via CertOps (Platform Certification & Operations) until July 30th. This first deadline is said to have been formulated and set by Sony at least 18 months ago.
According to Sony’s wishes, all titles released for the PlayStation 5 from September 15th must also support the PlayStation 5 Pro. This does not mean that the console will be released by then, but Sony wants to ensure that all current games will support the new platform when it is released.
This latest information was only communicated to developers again last week, it continues. Sony did not give a specific release date, but there are increasing signs that the hardware is still on track for a release this year. Documents leaked to Henderson from mid-2023 had previously suggested a release of the PS5 Pro in the second half of November 2024.
Although other sources continue to question the console release this year due to a lack of significant first-party games, all documents Henderson has seen do not indicate that the plan for a winter 2024 release has changed.
And when will Sony make an official announcement? Henderson suspects that Sony will proceed in a similar way to the PlayStation 4 Pro. This console was announced in September, before marketing began and the platform was available later in the year. Something similar can be expected with the PS5 Pro, especially since Sony has announced that it will actually be at the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) in September this year after a five-year absence. So the chances are pretty good that the PS5 Pro will be presented at the big Japanese trade fair – and then we should finally have clarity about the release date.
