game station It appears to be pushing into the mobile market as it sets up a dedicated mobile division and acquires a mobile-focused studio.

Earlier today (August 29), PlayStation announced that it would acquire mobile game developer Savage Game Studios. If you haven’t heard of it before, it’s probably because it hasn’t actually released a game, although its co-founders do include ex-Zynga, Rovio, and Insomniac employees, so there’s very little experience in the industry.

On top of that, PlayStation also announced that Savage Game Studios will be joining the newly formed PlayStation Studios mobile division, a sure sign that the company wants to get into the mobile market. As stated in the PlayStation Blog announcement, the newly formed division “will operate independently of our console development and focus on innovative, mobile experiences based on new and existing PlayStation IP.”

Savage Game Studios is already working on an unannounced new AAA mobile live-service action game, so it sounds like Sony isn’t just looking to pre-build in its mobile game lineup.

PlayStation also compared its mobile gaming plans to its current approach to bringing its games to PC, saying its “mobile gaming efforts will be similarly add-on, giving more people more ways to engage with our content, and working towards Attract new audiences unfamiliar with PlayStation and our games.”

Explaining Savage Game Studios’ decision to join PlayStation, co-founder Michail Katkoff said, “We entered into this deal because we believe the leadership of PlayStation Studios respects our vision for how best to operate and succeed, and because They’re also not afraid to take the chance. All of this, combined with the potential to tap into PlayStation’s amazing IP catalog, and the fact that we’re going to benefit from the kind of support that only they can provide.”

PlayStation’s future is likely to see more mobile-related acquisitions, and it’s not particularly surprising that we’ve seen many acquisitions over the course of the year.
