Have you ever had a video game itch that you just can’t seem to scratch? You know exactly what you want, but no matter what you play, it just doesn’t work for you.I’m going through this right now and it’s all because of the incredibly good anime and manga Delicious food in the dungeon. The anime is currently streaming on Netflix, and if you couldn’t tell this is my third article for the series in a month, I’m pretty obsessed with it.
I just had a really fun time, the character designs are very pleasing to the eye and Studio Trigger’s signature looks appear exactly when you need them. But… while I really love anime, and I love manga, what I really love is the side dish of the Dungeon Delicious video game. So, game developers, I beg you: Make a Delicious in Dungeon game, official or unofficial, and I’m on my knees.

It’s not that I didn’t look elsewhere for possible opportunities to have fun. First, you might think that a dungeon crawler game might be a good choice, since Dungeon Delicious literally tells the story of its protagonist exploring a dungeon and picking up treasures along the way. But many of the best-looking dungeon crawlers don’t let you cook the monsters you face. There are games like Monster Menu: Scavenger’s Recipe, but the aesthetic isn’t quite right, or maybe Dungeon Snacks, which even has a similar name, but the gameplay isn’t really what I’m looking for either. It’s like you’re trying to recreate a sandwich from that fancy place in town, but the ingredients aren’t as good and you don’t have the sauce.
You can’t say that Delicious in Dungeon wouldn’t be a perfect source of inspiration for the game. The manga’s creator, Ryoko Kui, is a huge fan of the Baldur’s Gate series and even drew a bunch of portraits of characters from the previous games a few years ago. Oh yeah, and there’s Baldur’s Gate 3, which I can always check out to satisfy my fantasy needs, and its D&D origins would definitely lend itself well to Delicious Dungeons – heck, if I wanted to , I could even play as one of the characters, but then again, where is the focus on eating monsters? I also want some wacky cooking mini-games!
Games like Dark and Darker pretty much fit the gameplay I’m looking for, which is to extract the dungeon crawler genre, but it’s a little too dark. This is another problem I think I have – I like some dark fantasy as much as next time, but a big part of the appeal of “Delicious in the Dungeon” is its lightness and comedy, even if it does have serious moments time. This in itself is one of the biggest problems I have with a lot of fantasy games these days, they take themselves way too seriously.
Personally, I like fantasy with a little bit of silliness. The Lord of the Rings, at least the movie, wouldn’t be as popular if it weren’t for funny moments like second breakfast, or the list of things you can do with potatoes (I promise I didn’t choose the food-related moments on purpose, I Probably just hungry).
The intersection of silly, fun, light-hearted, occasionally emotional, and dramatic is what makes Taste of the Dungeon such a success, and it’s really backed up by Quay’s amusing way of serving new meals to the adventuring group. I’d love to have a game where I could do everything myself, but right now I can’t find the right thing. So, once again, if you have the power to give me what I desire: If you give it to me, I will be forever grateful to you. Just make sure to season it well.
