The Last of Us: Goosebumps series trailer captures the spirit of the gaming masterpiece
The first reviews of The Last of Us
Although the series will not be released until January 16, critics can already report on their experiences with The Last of Us. On Metacritic, an average of 84 points was awarded, and on Rotten Tomatoes, the series has so far been able to shine with a proud 97 percent. A few of the previous ratings are shown in the following table:
That’s what the critics say
High praise comes from Empire writer John Nugent, who puts the series on a dizzyingly high pedestal:
Easily the best video game adaptation of all time: one that deepens the game’s dystopian lore while staying true to its emotional core. Like the game, it’s also a masterpiece.
Vanity Fair’s Richard Lawson is also positive, but can’t give the series the title of a masterpiece:
Because The Last of Us arrives in a medium that’s already saturated with similar material, the series doesn’t feel like a revolution. It’s just a well-crafted television series that easily rises above some of its genre peers.
Our colleague Leya Jankowski from MeinMMO appreciates the series, even if it can’t capture all the plus points of the game:
»The series on The Last of Us recognizes the advantages of its medium, which one consumes passively and takes full advantage of that. As a gamer, I’d be bored to death if I had to spend half an hour watching a minor character go about her bitter everyday life in the epidemic. The series makes the climaxes. […]
What is the great strength of the game – or all video games – is: You are actively involved. I’m the one who sends Joel and Ellie on their journey, accompanying them from the first person perspective. I end up pulling the trigger on the rusty pistol. Of course, the series cannot capture this feeling.«
However, who is not convinced of the series: Pat Brown from Slant Magazine. In his opinion, the loss of game feel is serious:
Stripping the gameplay out of a vibrant genre game filled with cinematic and series-ready moments, the series ends mostly with the latter: lots of meat, but no bones.
