Tabletop role-playing games are often referred to as pen and paper, but this is now very far from reality. Even though paper, pens and perhaps dice are sufficient to play in many cases, hardly any hero group today relies on such archaic methods.
Instead, the Playing via online services increasingly popular. Fueled by the Corona pandemic, many groups have acquired a taste for it and are using the digital offerings even if not all of their friends live in the same city.
Most of the time, third-party offers are used here, but Wizards of the Coast is currently working on its own VTT for Dungeons & Dragons (Virtual Tabletop). At Gen Con 2024, the project was renamed Project Sigil and some new information was revealed.

The latest version of Project Sigil was presented to the audience in Indianapolis during a panel. It showed how game masters can use it to build their 3D maps quickly and with great detail.
And those who prefer to tinker with characters rather than cards should be able to do so to their heart’s content. We’re talking about a character editor with tons of customization options. In addition, there will be Cooperation with well-known D&D brands that can then also appear in your digital worlds.
First and foremost, Baldur’s Gate 3, whose characters are available as virtual miniatures. You can then simply add Karlach, Astarion, Lae’zel and Co. to your game. Play them, fight them or seduce them.
There is currently no public version of Project Sigil, but that will soon change. A closed beta will start in the fall, for which you can register now.
What exactly is that?
VTTs are in a way the Intersection of tabletop role-playing games and video games. These programs are designed to facilitate online play by digitally representing dice rolls, but many go a step further. For example, some VTTs aim to make 2D cards and tokens more interactive by implementing dynamic fog of war.
