What does NAT mean?
The abbreviation NAT stands for "ñhor OneDress up Ť"And describes the process of automatically exchanging address information to connect different networks. For example, in homes, this works with routers.
In short, you can imagine the following scenario: your router has a public IP address and your PS4 has a local address. Since you usually connect multiple devices to a router, you must distribute them internally in some way. This is where NAT comes in. This ensures that you can play on the PS4 and the IP packets for the game arrive there, but you can also surf on your smartphone and the website is loaded there.

What do the three NAT types on PS4 mean?
The different NAT types of PS4 show you how much data the PS4 allows to transmit over the Internet. Although it has nothing to do with actual bandwidth, it describes different levels of security similar to firewalls.
True, in terms of terminology, "security level" may be wrong, it is actually a "permeability" of IP packets. If you connect your modem directly to a Playstation, there is hardly any way to block data transmission. Without a router and a firewall, you can connect almost directly to the Internet. Most of the time, you will use a router in your home network, which is why most people will use NAT type 2. This way, you can usually play all games and use all features.
Overall, you have three different NAT types on PS4, which have the following effects on online gaming and PS4 features:
- NAT type 1 [open] -PS4 connects directly to the Internet through a modem, so you can connect without a firewall or router.
- NAT type 2 [medium] -PS4 connects to the Internet through a properly configured router. All services are up and running.
- NAT Type 3 [strict] -The third type indicates that the router is configured incorrectly. Online games and services may not work at all or only to a limited extent.
How do you determine your NAT type?
You can view your NAT type on the console via [Settings] »[Network]» [Connection Status]. Here you will see "Type 1", "Type 2" or "Type 3" under "NAT Type".
NAT type 3 or NAT type 2 and some functions do not work?
Do you have the worst NAT type 3 or-correct in most cases-NAT type 2 and some games or features still do not work? Then, the router's port sharing will help you. Below this article, we will explain which ports you must open and how to set them up on your router.
Which ports must PS4 activate?
PS4 needs to release multiple TCP and UDP ports. This is related to the fact that some are used for the game itself, while others are used for chat functions. You must release or "forward" the following areas on your router:
- TCP protocol: 465, 983, 1935, 3478-3480, 5223, 10070-10080
- UDP protocol: 3478, 3479, 3658, 10070
So you can be in Fritz! Set port release on Box
If you have Fritz! Box, you can set port sharing for PS4 by following these steps:
- Sign in to your Fritzbox
- Click on "Internet" and then "Shares"
- Select the Port Publishing tab here
- Click the "Edit" button next to PS4 in the list
- Then select "New Release" and activate the "Port Release" option
You can set the port version here. The following steps must be performed on all TCP and UDP ports listed above. Ensure that the correct range is specified for the port range and that the correct protocol type is specified. For the first port version [TCP, port 465], follow these steps:
- Select the "Other Applications" entry under "Applications"
- Enter any name, such as "PS4-TCP-465"
- Under "Protocol", select the entry "TCP"
- Now enter the required port in the "Port to Device", "To Port" and "Required External Port [IPv4]" fields-"465" in our example
- Then click "OK" to activate the distribution
Use a port range, for example for TCP ports 10070-10080, you don't have to enable a single port, here you can set the entire block at once. Enter only the first port [10070] for Port to Device and the last port [10080] for To Port. In the Externally requested port [IPv4] field, enter only the first port.
