Video games don’t usually imitate little things. Realism tends to depict the world on a scale that humans can walk around in.However, rotating the macro lens onto the Unreal Engine camera and pointing it at the digital miniature produces wonderful effects that make railway grade The otherwise rather standard route planning is puzzling and absolute fun to get caught up in.

In short, it is transportable. For me, it takes me back to my childhood bedroom, where the ever-reconfiguring TOMY train crew lives forever on the floor, forever in the Ghostbusters firehouse and the permanently crashed Star Trek: The Next Generation Shuttle. Shipping all kinds of Lego bricks between. Who knows why. The mind of a ten-year-old is unknowable, even if you are a child.

This is much better than the rug I use to ride the train.

It would be a disservice to RAILGRADE, though, if the only good thing about RAILGRADE is because some form of goalpost jumper prompts childhood nostalgia. It’s a solid, stage-based transport puzzler that’s forgiving enough to keep a fun time going throughout, but also challenging enough to be maddening, especially during the bonus stages. Its open-ended nature fosters a wealth of replayability, and the whole story is filled with humor: you believe, there is an overarching story about the overthrow of space capitalists, with a lot of satirical observations of worker exploitation being thrown into it. Well, a product of the times.
