Bethesda used QuakeCon to put the spotlight on Arkane Studios and their upcoming shooter Redfall – with a long video and lots of information.
So far, Bethesda hasn’t quite managed to convey exactly what Arkane Studios’ Redfall is – a problem that was also noted with Deathloop, the studio’s previous game. For most people, Redfall has probably stuck in their heads as a co-op shooter with a vampire scenario. With a 20-minute video with plenty of developer comments, there were now interesting insights into the game as part of QuakeCon.
Most importantly: Redfall is apparently not supposed to be a “real” co-op shooter, but a typical Arkane shooter RPG that you can play both solo and together. Solo players should be served well. In the vampire scenario, you don’t want to rely on jumpscares, but rather create a gloomy atmosphere. Redfall also strives for a living feel, with patrol routes that change with the day-night cycle, weather systems like fog and rain, and random spawn points.
This fits the story, which apparently follows a sci-fi approach. It starts with the tech startup Aevum Laboratories acquiring land in Salem’s Lot to conduct life extension research there. But that obviously goes haywire and the employees become vampires who gradually take over the city.
For the fight you have the choice of four different characters with their own skill trees, but without fixed roles. Jacob Boyer can turn invisible and specializes in long-range weapons such as sniper rifles. Devinder Crousely uses various area-of-effect gadgets and abilities to fight back the vampire hordes.
It’s worth taking a look at the video if you want to learn more about Redfall. The game will still be a while away – it was originally scheduled for release this year but has been pushed back to 2023 along with Starfield.
In an extensive video, the Arkane Austin team gives you a deep insight into the upcoming action hit Redfall.
