Fighting chaos with even more chaos. Borderlands 4 It collects on PC and consoles the legacy of the saga that invented the concept and the excitement of looter-shooters and continues it right where the story left off. The direct continuation of Borderlands 3? According to Gearbox itself, we are facing the craziest and most ambitious game in the entire franchise.

Development news

Gearbox Software began developing Borderlands 4 before concluding and launching the third installment, which places the start of its production in 2019. In fact, when Andrew Reiner, the studio's Global Creative Executive Officer, joined the team in 2022, the first thing he did was play a development version Borderlands 4stating that the new ideas that had been implemented left him speechless.
According to Randy Varnell, one of the four main directors of the project and head of the Creative Team, the beginning of production of the next video game Borderlands It started when not even a day had passed since the game's 2019 release.
We literally started making the new Borderland hours after releasing the last one. The Borderlands 3 team was playing and enjoying the experience and at that moment we started thinking about the whole journey and what we could do to continue it together. To consider how we could do even more.
However, between the project of creating a new Borderlands As it took shape, there was a change of hands for both the franchise and Gearbox. In March 2024 it was announced that Embracer sold the Texas studio and all of its franchises to Take Two for $460 million.

The next big move was the long-delayed premiere of the adaptation of the saga to the big screen, which was a complete disaster at the box office and critics, so Gearbox came to the rescue of the brand and on August 20, 2024 announced with a small teaser, now officially, Borderlands 4 as part of the Gamescom Opening Night. An aperitif that, in fact, was the very end of Borderlands 3, leaving it implicit that the story was a point and apart.
Gearbox offered new clues about the project through its own dedicated panel during PAX West 2024, although we will have to wait until the Game Awards ceremony, already in December of that same year, to be able to see a bit of that promised action and the leap towards the Unreal Engine 5 that will power the game. Of course, preserving that apocalyptic aesthetic in which the settings and characters almost seem drawn. In the process, the four new Vault Hunters and the new great enemy were shown: the Chronoguardian.
What Borderlands 4 is about

From a plot point of view, Borderlards 4 It is the direct continuation of the last installment. Without going into more details than necessary, the moon Elpis was going to destroy the chaotic planet Pandora and, at the last minute, one of the great characters of the saga managed to teleport the entire moon to some remote place located in the same universe. The side effect of this is that Elpis appeared in another galaxy, destroying the protective barrier that hid an entire planet, and that raises an interesting question shared for the new protagonists and the fans of the saga themselves. What exactly is happening there?
As we mentioned at the beginning, the action of Borderlards 4 takes place on a new planet created for the occasion called Kairos. The action takes place several years later and the fuse of everything is the discovery of this world and its opening to the rest of the galaxies. Something that arouses the anger of Chronoguardianthe tyrant who has subjugated all of existence there and sees this succession of irruptions as a direct threat to what he considers his perfect order.
What the Chronoguardian does not know is that even the enormous destruction caused by Pandora's moon will be nothing compared to the explosive entry on the scene of the four Vault Hunters who will break into his planet and spark the rebellion against him. Heroes, vigilantes or liberators? In principle none of those things: this group of scoundrels has come in search of wealth and glory and what is already guaranteed is that they are going to encounter tons of enemies, millions of weapons and surreal situations full of action.

Borderlands 4 is a looter-shooter in which the constant first-person action is interspersed with the humor of its protagonists and the explosive situations that explode on the screen. According to its creators, this installment has a bit of the previous three, including the spirit of discovery and treasure hunt of the first game, the search for revenge of the second and that kind of constant confrontation during the development of the plot against the main enemies of the third installment. Of course, all seasoned with that hooligan spirit of the franchise and the scoundrel humor of its characters.
In the process, Gearbox has proposed that Borderlands 4 offer a plot in which the players, who will put themselves in the shoes of the Vault Hunters, are the epicenter of the entire story, offering an environment and a new reactive world in which the action and what happens during the plot happens naturally and staggered. Which does not mean that in the end the most fun is taking advantage of the gunplay and testing the infinite number of firearms against the mechanical monstrosities, thugs and beasts that come our way on this new planet.
Logically, all of the above raises the question: Will Borderlands 4 be an open world? The creators do not use that specific term, but they do anticipate that there will be huge scenarios and although the combats and chaos derived from them will continue to be one of the greatest strengths of this installment, players will be offered free exploration. Whether we play separately or with friends.

Borderlands is one of those sagas designed to be enjoyed more and better with friends, and the fourth installment will not be the exception: Gearbox has confirmed that the systems on which the game will be released will have cooperative multiplayer over the internet and, in addition, in the In the case of the desktop versions, it will be possible to connect a second controller to the console and join the game.
