Donald Glover, who plays young Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story, wants to add some “fun” to the sci-fi series.
The way people talk about Star Wars, it’s easy to forget that the original was just a silly trilogy, with big explosions, ridiculous plot twists, and little green puppets giving surprisingly sage advice. There’s room for some serious moments in its universe, too, but it seems like the basic sense of fun is now reserved more for the games, while shows like The Mandalorian and The Following lean more toward drama most of the time. Actor Donal Glover, who seems to be hoping his upcoming Lando movie will make Star Wars fun again, is also known for his music under the alias Childish Gambino.

“I just want to make the movies fun,” Glover told The Wall Street Journal in a recent video interview. “As a Star Wars fan, I think that’s important — there needs to be more fun.” He continued, “It’s hard to have fun right now. It’s hard because there are really serious things going on. And weirdly enough, these are the only things that connect us together, so I understand why things are serious, but I believe that part of the human experience is that we have a responsibility to have fun, and I just feel like we’re lacking in that aspect.”
“I love Star Wars, but sometimes it’s very serious, sometimes too serious, and everything about Skywalker is too serious,” Glover continued with a laugh. The actor first appeared as the classic Star Wars character in the 2018 prequel Solo: A Star Wars Story. Lando was originally planned to be a Disney Plus series, with Dear White People and Haunted Mansion director Justin Simien as showrunner.
Disney later decided to abandon the idea of releasing Lando as a series, opting instead to make a movie, with Glover and his brother Stephen now writing the script. The movie does not yet have a release date.
