It was time to take stock and the cut has not been passed: according to reports the middle deadline Exclusively, the Resident Evil series broadcast on Netflix will not have a second season. And despite the fact that it has only been a month and a half since its premiere, the other reality is that many of the viewers and fans of video games have not been caught very by surprise. What has happened?
Developed by own Constantine Films (responsible for the film saga and the terrible Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City) the new and libre adaptation of the successful Capcom video game fell far behind the expectations placed on it: despite being a great production, it barely lasted among the most watched on Netflix. Taking into account the powerful slipstream of Stranger Things 4,
In fact, the equation that Netflix uses to establish renewals, according to Deadline, is very simple: compare the cost of making a new season with the views achieved by the previous one. Precisely for this reason, and as a reference, the Neil Gaiman is campaigning day in and day out with the series of Sandman.
The figures offered by the portal dedicated to Hollywood news are much more specific: in the first two weeks 73.3 million hours viewed were accumulated. Is that a lot or a little? although Resident Evil was placed as the second most watched Netflix production in its premiere, it took just three weeks to break out of the Top 10. The bad reviews by the public and the generated memes (quite rightly) did not help either.
From here it is time to clear up the other unknown: is it good or bad news for those who are passionate about video games? Definitely the acronym for Resident Evil
- Although, for millions of fans of the Survival Horrors and the zombie series was a claim to see how the video game universe had been imagined in the small screen format, the other reality is that everything that gives character, identity and a reason for being to Capcom’s video games was conspicuous by its absence in their very poorly planned eight hours of footage.
- However, as a series that takes place in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, you may like it more or less, but Resident Evil, the Netflix series, was another missed opportunity to tap into the rich and ever-changing background of video games and deliver something truly interesting to the viewer. Or at least something cable to generate a minimum of interest for a renewal.
Except for last minute surprises, the story and the conflict of the Wesker sisters in the face of the post-apocalyptic nightmare in which they find themselves involved remains completely unresolved. Of course, Netflix’s plan to adapt video games to its video platform is still in full swing: the second season of The Cuphead Show and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will be released in August. Before closing the year we will see Sonic and the Horizon Zero Dawn series is already underway.
At least, as far as the video game saga is concerned, the present and the future look great: new content sets the course for Resident Evil Village, including a new story that will serve as a continuation and epilogue, while the remake of Resident Evil 4 It is imposed as one of the games to follow the track in 2023. What we take with us.
