Last spring, the title Returnal by Housemarque was released exclusively for PS5 and knew how to convince. Now a comprehensive new update including fresh game modes is in the starting blocks.
As part of last night’s State of Play, Sony and Housemarque announced the Ascension update to Returnal. This is to be made available free of charge from March 22, 2022 and upgrades the game to the new version 3.0 – including fresh game modes.
The patch focuses on a new co-op mode and a survival mode; The latter is called “Tower of Sisyphus”. Both should help the title of the Resogun makers to a new high after it had proved to be a great success for the original rele ase.
While the main game was designed as a single-player title, the makers have bowed to the demands for a co-op mode and are now delivering it as an online version. Here you can team up with another player to face the dangers of Atropos.
If you access the Chronosis Portal near the crash site (and other select locations in the game), you can host or join a public cycle. However, if you’d rather share the experience with a friend, you can host a private cycle instead. Once you are connected, a Selene from another timeline will join your session and you can begin your journey together. Otherwise, the game then runs similar to the single player part, but players must not move too far apart.
Meanwhile, the Tower of Sisyphus survival mode is designed to focus on your survival skills and put your stamina to the test; At the same time, the studio is returning to its own roots in the arcade area, so to speak. In the endless mode, you have to climb the tower as far as possible, but like the tragic story of Sisyphus, there is no end to this. Since the challenge becomes more and more difficult over time, the mode inevitably always ends with your death. The only question is: how far will you get there?
Each phase of the Tower concludes with an encounter with Algos, but these encounters also become more difficult each time. Unlike the campaign, due to the nature of Mmode, there is a leaderboard that you can use to compare your progress and scores. In addition to new levels, a new boss and new items, there is also completely new story content to discover in the tower.
With “Ascension” a comprehensive update to Returnal including co-op and survival modes was announced.
