Peplum of the new millennium
A 2000, Ridley Scott (Foreigner, Blade Runner) took out his gladiator, an ambitious darling that enjoyed huge success upon its release and quickly became a cult film among film fans. Carried by the performances of Russell Crowe (Man of Steel, The mummy), Joaquin Phoenix (Her,joker) and Connie Nielsen (3 days to kill, Wonder Woman), gladiator tells the story of Maximus, a Roman general who is betrayed and captured as a slave to fight as a gladiator in the Roman arenas.
With a budget of 100 million dollars gladiator collected more than $450 millionan undeniable success, which, however, was not to be followed by a sequel. If Ridley Scott actually tried for a while to tackle a second part of his epic, the director is torn between unsatisfactory research and the numerous projects he has wanted to direct over the years.
The unbeatable musicals
It's finally in 2024, 24 years and 17 films after the first partthat Ridley Scott finally presents Gladiator IIa highly anticipated film, but unfortunately it may not have the same success as the first. In fact, just over two weeks after its release, the British filmmaker's latest film The film barely reaches $320 million at the box office for a budget estimated between $210 and $310 million.
It must be said that the film had to be confronted Evil from the first week and Moana 2 during the second: two works that attract the general public much more and whose first numbers seem to testify to their attractiveness. Gladiator II should still recoup its costs in the end, especially when streaming and physical media exploitation are taken into account, but the work's mixed success is another setback for Ridley Scott after his Napoleon and could well end any possibility of a sequel.
