Yes, Max Payne is really returning! Rockstar and Remedy are making a comeback for two true shooter masterpieces. However, not in the course of a sequel, but from remakes of the first two games: Max Payne and Max Payne 2. The new editions are implemented in the control engine and appear for PC and next-gen consoles. We provide you with all the information.
Max Payne: All the info about the remakes
How exactly does Max Payne return?
Remake of part 1 and 2: Max Payne isn’t returning in a full-fledged sequel or reboot. Instead, a remake is planned, which includes the first two parts of the shooter series – namely Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. However, the remakes do without the ten-year-old Max Payne 3, which was developed by the GTA makers Rockstar.
For the Max Payne remakes Remedys Northlight-Engine used, which was already used by Control. The new edition of the two shooter classics should be on a level with the typical AAA productions from Remedy. This could put the Max Payne Remake in the same vein as, for example, the reboots of Resident Evil 2 or Dead Space beat.
Which developer is responsible for this?
Remedy Developed, Rockstar Funded: Studio Remedy (Alan Wake, Control) is responsible for the development of the Max Payne Remakes, while Rockstar Games finances the production and acts as publisher. This closes the circle after the first two Max Payne parts were also created by Remedy and Rockstar was responsible for Max Payne 3 itself.
According to Remedy’s official announcement, the studio itself has approached the GTA and Red Dead Redemption developer to get the project off the ground. However, it may be a few more years before we see and play the reboots of the first two Max Payne games.
When is the Max Payne Remake release?
Release still far away:
Remedy has a lot to do: Remedy itself works with Alan Wake 2 and one Sequel to Control meanwhile also on two other AAA games. The development studio should therefore be quite busy in the coming years.
What platforms is the remake planned for?
PC and next-gen: The remake of Max Payne and Max Payne 2 is to appear for PC, as well as the next-gen consoles Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Accordingly, no release for PS4 or Xbox One is planned.

What is Max Payne about anyway?
The first Max Payne appeared in 2001, followed in 2003 by the sequel. Both games were created by the developer studio Remedy, followed in 2012 by Max Payne 3 by Rockstar Games. Max Payne and Max Payne 3 are two true cult games in the shooter genre, in which we take on the role of the eponymous heroes
Hatch.
The games, which are heavily based on the aesthetics of crime noir thrillers, revolve around police officer Max, who finds himself in rainy New York on a bloody vendetta against the murderers of his family. Characteristic of the legendary game series is the so-called Bullet Time
which film fans of course know from The Matrix and is now commonplace in modern shooters.
Incidentally, in 2021 Natalie paid a visit to the very first Max Payne and put it to the test how well Remedy’s shooter masterpiece still plays today – and whether Max’s face is still as creepy:
Max Payne
Will the cult shooter still play so great in 2021?
