Can you get more out of the AMD Ryzen 3000 processor and even reduce energy consumption?
This is what ClockTuner for Ryzen promises from »1usmus«, the maker of the popular DRAM Calculator for Ryzen. To be precise, the promise applies to all Zen 2 processors, including Ryzen Threadripper 3000 and Ryzen 4000 for laptops (APUs), like Guru3D reports. But how is that possible?
AMD Ryzen 4000 Specs & Release
No simple overclocking
First of all, ClockTuner for Ryzen does not simply overclock the processor or the cores, but optimizes them. Specifically, the tool examines the individual core complexes (CCX) fully automatically and adjusts the clock frequency and voltage for each CCX individually. 1usmus has specially modified the Prime95 stability test.
What is a CCX?
In the case of Zen 2, a CCX complex is a group of four CPU cores and their caches. A Ryzen 7 3700X with eight cores, for example, consists of two CCX modules on a CCD (Core Chiplet Die). In turn, a maximum of two CCX modules can be accommodated per CCD. A Ryzen 9 3950X with sixteen cores thus consists of two CCD and four CCX modules.
What to expect
More performance, less consumption: According to Guru3D, the results of the ClockTuner for Ryzen are convincing. With a Ryzen 9 3900X (12C / 24T) it was possible to increase the performance by almost 7 percent and at the same time reduce the power consumption by 9.5 percent.
With a Ryzen Threadripper 3960X (24C / 48T), the performance is said to have increased by 5 percent and power consumption to be reduced by 4.5 percent.
Free choice: However, it is up to the individual user what they choose. A preset for particularly high energy efficiency can also be selected, and it is also possible to get the absolute maximum performance from the Zen-2 CPU.
How do I get the ClockTuner?
The ClockTuner for Ryzen is not yet available for download, it is currently in the test phase. Guru3D expects the publication in September.
