In its various financial reports, SEGA regularly mentions its intention to reuse its older licenses. And that for several years. Recent events, and above all a success, have prompted the Japanese publisher to look more seriously at the subject. This time around, SEGA also specifically mentioned some of its older brands that deserve to be reused.
SEGA still intends to reuse some of its old licenses. Haruki Satomi’s company confirmed this during their recent SEGA management meeting. If the publisher has already mentioned such intentions, interest in the process has recently grown significantly. For a very specific reason. In fact, according to SEGA, Sonic’s huge success, The Film, has given ideas to other companies:
Due to the tremendous popularity of the Sonic movie, we are currently reviewing the value of our old licenses, including Sonic. We receive a lot of inquiries about a possible cooperation.
We have listed important examples of previous licenses in the document. And we’re going to look at the correct deployment approach (of those licenses) and try to use them one by one.
Do something new with old SEGA licenses
The old SEGA licenses listed in the document are: Shinobi, OutRun, Space Channel 5, After Burner, Crazy Taxi, Golden Ax and Jet Set Radio.
Some fans of SEGA will not miss the fact that these licenses are explicitly mentioned. Even if the editor states that this is “fromExamples, “Other fans may regret that their favorite licenses were not selected as”Main examples. “For example, Shenmue doesn’t appear here.
Video games, but not only?
Furthermore, the way SEGA is presenting the matter suggests that this use of old licenses is not necessarily about new video games. To re-use Shenmue’s example, it seems that the latter’s immediate future won’t be through the video game. It was actually announced that a Shenmue animated series is currently in production.
Sonic has found success in the movies. For its part, Netflix is preparing an animated series that is also inspired by the adventures of the hedgehog in a hurry. And as already mentioned, a Shenmue anime is also about to be released. The return of old SEGA licenses can therefore take many forms.
What do you think of these statements by SEGA about its old licenses? Which series would you like to see return? Could returns that don’t come in the form of video games interest you? If so, under what conditions? Which old SEGA licenses would result in good games in 2022? Tell us all about it in the comments below.
