Gaming News Service Games: Heading Towards a Dark Future for Video Games?
While some are concerned about the relevance of gaming services, others see clear benefits for video games. Discover the arguments of both parties in our JV debate.
Whether you like it or not, video games and gaming services are slowly evolving. These titles allow developers to offer a game that will last over a longer period of time and therefore exploit a commercial window for much longer than average. However, this system worries many. For more information, please take a look at our JV debate.
The service game, the perfect solution?
In service games, developers offer regular content via updates or mini-DLCs to keep players coming back. This idea was popularized by successful MMOs like World of Warcraft, which offer a monthly subscription in exchange for varied content. GAAS has gone through numerous iterations over the years, especially in mobile games. It is the Tencent company that ventured into game services in 2007 and is now the largest video game publisher in the world. The genre now occupies an important place in the industry, so much so that the Game Awards has its own category, and we can wonder if this will not harm the future of video games. At least that is the question we are asking ourselves in our JV debate.
An unstoppable assassin?
For his part, Kaname is concerned about the impact gaming services can have on players. He mentions a “Vicious circle“, which is difficult to escape. And in fact, extremely popular titles like Genshin Impact collect hundreds of millions of dollars every year. The Hoyoverse baby offers entertaining and attractive content, although the player must log in every day if he does not want to miss anything. But not only Gachas use this system, but also multiplayer titles like Apex Legends. However, not everything can be thrown away for the GAAS, something Panthaa definitely defends in our JV debate. For him, these games are time-consuming, but can be a good entry point for people who aren’t keen on intrusive experiences. Let’s take the example of a again Genshin Impact, It can be the first attempt for a new player who wants to enter the world of J-RPGs.
