News culture SF wouldn’t be the same without France. 15 years later, the legend behind “Alien” and “Mad Max” was back
French genre cinema has been experiencing a second resurgence in recent years with ambitious projects capable of dusting off a (still too much) 7th art vision, often focused on comedy and drama. Science fiction “Made in France” is far too rare in France. However, SF owes a lot to our country and its artists. Without France, there would be no Mad Max, no Alien, no Blade Runner…
Talented French filmmakers no longer have to leave the country to express their passion for science fiction on film. In 2023, director Jérémie Périn gave moviegoers a first-class trip to the planet Mars. The CG animated film Mars Express is particularly inspired by RoboCop, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Ghost in the Shell, Terminator 2 and of course a French magazine well known to science fiction fans.
Metal Hurlant is a French comic magazine specializing in science fiction, all subgenres combined. It was created in 1975 by Jean-Pierre Dionnet, Philippe Druillet and of course the author Moebius (the saga of the Incal) under the banner of the newly founded publishing house Les Humanoids Associés. Métal Hurlant was published until 1987 and ended in 1987 before rising from the ashes in 2002. Unfortunately, this return was short-lived as publication ceased again two years later.
In 2021, Métal Hurlant magazine will be brought back to life under the leadership of publisher Vincent Bernière and a crowdfunding campaign with almost 3,000 participants. The first issue of the now quarterly magazine will be published at the end of September 2021 with the content of around twenty short stories.
Métal Hurlant still exists in the 21st century and that is the essence. French SF is immortal. The captain of the Nexus VI YouTube channel hailed the magazine as the spark behind modern science fiction
Comics, especially French ones, have had a special impact on the entire global imagination of our favorite genre. And that’s thanks to Métal Hurlant magazine. It is a cult magazine founded in the 70s by Dionnet, Druillet and Moebius. And to put it bluntly. Without them, Mad Max, Alien and Blade Runner would have had a different face or would not have existed at all. – The Captain (Nexus VI)
