Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has finally hit theaters and it seems it was worth the wait. Not only did the film get pretty good reviews, but it’s also had full box offices so f ar.
Hard to believe, but true: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 did a great job on the opening weekend and even had the best theatrical release of a video game adaptation to date. According to Variety, the film was able to bring in a whopping 71 million US dollars on the opening weekend in the USA alone, displacing the previous leader – which is the predecessor Sonic the Hedgehog, which in 2020 was at least 58 million US dollars at the box office flushed.
The film is also successful worldwide. In addition to the $71 million in the USA, another $37 million was grossed in 53 other territories on the opening weekend. In total, the film has grossed $141 million so far – the film opened on April 8th in the US, but in some other territories as early as March 30th.
With that launch, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 even managed to beat Marvel’s Mobius and Michael Bay’s Ambulance. Chances are now that the film can surpass its predecessor’s grossing of $319 million. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is said to have cost $90 million, so all signs are positive for Sega and Paramount.
