Microsoft made people sit up and take notice with the purchases of Bethesda and Activision Blizzard – and Sony has not yet been able to counter adequately despite the Bungie purchase. Rumor has it that this could change with the next acquisition.
Sony had always emphasized that it was far from giving in to Microsoft and that it wanted to buy more studios to strengthen its own first-party line-up. If you believe the latest rumours, you could definitely make people sit up and take notice with the next planned purchase.
There has been speculation for a long time that Sony could incorporate Kojima Productions. While that would be remarkable, it still wouldn’t have the quality of Microsoft’s Bethesda or Activision purchases. A well-known insider now denies the Kojima rumor – because Sony has bigger plans.
If Sony strikes again in the near future and takes over a games company, it will be a notable move, according to the usually well-informed insider Jeff Grubb. The company that is supposed to soon belong to Sony is not supposed to be Kojima Productions, but a noticeably larger company.
Despite his sources, Grubb initially leaves open what the really big studio that Sony has in mind is supposed to be. There is always speculation on the internet that it could be either Publisher Electronic Arts or Ubisoft. In addition, the names From Software (Dark Souls, Elden Ring), Capcom and Square Enix (Final Fantasy) are mentioned. It remains to be seen if and when Sony can actually tie down a massive deal and which company it will be. We will keep you up to date!
