- Through “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” we learn more about Pike and Spock’s relationship.
In the famous “Starship Enterprise” episode “Talos IV – TabuSpock (Leonard Nimoy) mutinied in order to bring the wheelchair-bound and horribly injured Captain Pike to the planet Talos IV. However, Starfleet regulations prohibit visits to the planet.
When Spock nevertheless risks his career to give his former captain – “Star Trek” takes place seven years after “Strange New Worlds” in the “Star Trek” chronology – a better life on Talos IV for his former captain, Kirk realizes that Spock’s relationship to Pike must be very special.
As a half-Vulcan, Spock rarely has such deep friendships, and even more rarely acts so “illogically”. However, on Talos IV, the telepathic abilities of the Talosians allow Pike to be given the illusion that he can walk, talk, and live on as he once was. Spock Pike would like to grant this chance at any price!
In the Season 1 finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, we learn why Spock feels a deep duty to Pike. In the episode, Pike (Anson Mount), knowing his fate, seeks ways to change his and other cadets’ futures.
Through a visit from his future self and a time stone, Pike arrives in a future where he averted the accident. However, he has to realize that his decision causes even more tragedy and now the fate of a life connected to an auxiliary device does not await him, but Spock (Ethan Peck).
In addition, Pike realizes that averting his accident will also lead to a war with the Romulans, which Spock in the “correct” timeline is key to avoiding. At the end of the episode, Pike is back in his time and is very pleased when Spock comes to him.
Spock is puzzled because he didn’t witness Pike’s journey, so it has only been moments since t heir last meeting for Spock. However, Spock quickly understands, and when Pike tells him that he will no longer try to avert his future, otherwise it would happen to someone else, Spock realizes that he is meant.
Spock concludes that he owes Pike a debt of gratitude and thanks him, although he admits he doesn’t know exactly what for. Still, Spock understands that Pike is sacrificing his own life so that Spock can live a full life, and he may feel some guilt for doing so.
Blame it or not, it explains why Spock is determined to return the favor to Pike in “Talos IV – Taboo” and do everything in his power to bestow a better fate on his former captain.
