It came as a surprise that the fifth season of “Star Trek: Discovery” would be the finale of the series. Nevertheless, the series makers “didn’t do anything differently.”
- The cancellation of “Star Trek: Discovery” came as a surprise, even for the series creators.
- In order to give the series a well-rounded finale, some scenes from the last episode were refilmed.
- Nothing was changed in the rest of the season, but according to showrunner Michelle Paradise, that wasn’t a problem.
The final season of “Star Trek: Discovery” starts streaming on Paramount+ on April 4, 2024. However, the fact that season 5 would be the finale came as a surprise not only to fans, but also to the crew.
Showrunner Michelle Paradise has now talked about the fact that the season wasn’t actually intended to be a conclusion due to the spontaneous cancellation, but that looking back she was very happy with the series finale: “I don’t think we would have done anything differently, even if we had known it would be our final season.”
Star Trek: After the surprise cancellation, some scenes were reshot
When “Star Trek: Discovery” was canceled in March 2023, it wasn’t just the fans who were surprised. “When we filmed the season, we didn’t know that it would be our final season,” reveals series creator Michelle Paradise in an interview Screen Rant
In order to finally develop the fifth season into a fully-fledged series finale, the final episode was adapted again and there were reshoots. However, these only took place for the final episode and no other episodes, as “Picard” star Jonathan Frakes revealed.
Nevertheless, Paradise is very satisfied with the end result: “I think that what we explore thematically and in terms of our characters’ emotional developments and storylines is ultimately very satisfying.”
I don’t think we would have done anything differently even if we had known it would be our final season.

Paradise emphasizes that the entire season works well as a finale, but admits that the reshoots for the very last episode were a stroke of luck: “Fortunately, the studio and the network gave us the opportunity to do it again [zum Set] “To go back and do some additional footage so we could complete the series as a whole.”
“And I think when you’re ending a series of any kind, but especially one as beloved as this one, you want to make sure it feels satisfying and you want the characters to have a really good ending,” continues them away.
You don’t want to have any more unanswered questions floating around in an unpleasant way. You want to end everything in a really positive way. And I think we succeeded. I’m really proud of how it turned out.
