In “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” a new Captain Kirk is introduced with Paul Wesley. The actor has even met cult star William Shatner, though Wesley hasn’t been able to turn to him for advice.
- New Kirk actor Paul Wesley happened to be sitting next to Star Trek legend William Shatner on a plane.
- Wesley was keen to ask Shatner for some tips, but it was not announced at the time that Wesley would be playing Kirk.
- Neither Shatner nor the rest of the world knew that there would be a new Kirk cast member.
Paul Wesley made his debut as Captain James T. Kirk in the season one finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. He succeeds William Shatner, who became an icon of the “Star Trek” universe in the 1960s through his performance as Kirk. Wesley now reveals that he met Shatner but couldn’t ask for his advice, even though he wanted so badly.
In conversation with US magazine Collider tells Wesley that he happened to be sitting next to Shatner on a plane. Shatner has just returned from his space trip and it has not yet been officially announced that Wesley Shatner would inherit as the new Kirk.
“I was still a bit coy. I promised silence, secrecy madness, so I couldn’t just say, ‘Hey, you know I’m playing Kirk, give out the tips!’ I had to exercise a little caution and play dumb. I really wanted to be frank with him about it.”
But the signed NDAs (Non Disclosure Agreement) weren’t the only thing stopping Paul Wesley from speaking openly with William Shatner: “I didn’t want to bother him. He just came back from space and we happened to be sitting next to each other. I wanted to don’t talk his ear off.”
“We talked a little bit, but less about Kirk. I’m sure he’s been talking about Kirk for who knows how many years and I just wanted to chat,” explains Paul Wesley.
It is not yet known when “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” season 2 will start and show us more of Paul Wesley’s Captain Kirk. There are plenty of other Star Trek releases coming this year!
