THE SERIES

“Star Wars” is better than “Star Trek”? The eternal question between the fandoms remains. We have compared both series and show you their respective strengths and weaknesses.

“Star Wars” hit the big screen in 1977, while the “Star Trek” series has been around since the 1960s. Since then, there has been a major conflict between fans of George Lucas’ galaxy far, far away and fans of Gene Roddenberry’s science fiction franchise.

The “Star Wars” universe has a rich and epic mythology that many fans find inspiring and powerful. The story of “Star Wars” has evolved over several decades and includes not only films, but also series, books, comics, video games and more. “Star Trek” also has a rich history, but it is usually limited to television series and films.

We think both universes are great and don’t want to decide. But there are things we like better about “Star Wars” than “Star Trek” and vice versa. On the next few pages we’ll tell you what’s better about “Star Wars”. Of course, some of these arguments should be taken with a wink.

Star Wars vs. Star Trek – let the battle begin!

If there is one thing from the “Star Wars” universe that everyone should know, it is lightsabers. Of course, this really cool-looking weapon is not physically possible, but that is not what it is trying to be. The spectacular action scenes are often connected to lightsabers and the Force. Star Wars is about entertainment, something that does not fit into the universe with “Star Trek’s” philosophical and realistic approach.

Star Wars takes creative liberties!

Star Wars is often more challenging than Star Trek in terms of creativity and imagination. The world of Star Wars is full of alien creatures, spaceships, planets and technologies that delight and inspire fans.

In “Star Trek” there is an explanation for every technology that at least tries to be realistic. In “Star Wars” Jedi hop over their opponents like fleas and carry weapons that physically cannot exist: Lightsabers!

There is no Wesley Crusher in Star Wars!

In “The Big Bang Theory,” Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) makes it clear that despite his love of “Star Trek,” he is not a fan of Wesley Crusher (Will Wheaton). Well, he is not alone in this. “Star Wars” can thus attract all “Star Trek” fans who need a break from Wesley Crusher. However, whether Jar Jar Binks is necessarily the better choice is up to each fan.

The “Force” in Star Wars!

Who hasn’t sat in front of some object as a child and then convinced themselves that the glass of water had moved a few millimeters? The idea that we are surrounded by a kind of “power” that we can use inspires people all over the world. The approach of a kind of religion that pays homage to power also creates a mythical and powerful atmosphere. With “Star Wars” you feel like you’re watching something more like a fairy tale than science fiction. An epic fairy tale, with – have you mentioned it? – Lightsabers!

The epicness of the Star Wars storyline

The “Star Wars” universe consists of several films that tell a coherent story. Everything is somehow connected. The epic story is expanded by books and series. Of course, “Star Trek” also has coherent storylines, books, films and series.

But with “Star Wars” it’s more fateful, more difficult! The emotional impact is built up through the coherent story and overarching epic. “Star Trek” is a little more relaxed and is more about interpersonal problems and an optimistic picture of the future. Both are fun, but the epic nature of “Star Wars” is more likely to knock you off your feet emotionally.

While “Star Trek” consists of more than eleven series and 13 films, which you can never catch up on in just one day, if you want to be able to join in with the conversations in “Star Wars” you can catch up on the Skywalker saga (Episodes I-IX) in one day. If you still feel like it, you can of course also watch series like “The Mandalorian” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and keep yourself busy for several weeks and months.

With “Star Trek”, however, there is a lot more to catch up on. We will help you pick out the cherries from “Star Trek” for a marathon.

Phew, that reason is discriminatory! But the pop-cultural influence of Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) in a slave bikini on a necklace in front of a fat slug named Jabba, who has a rancor as a pet and green pigs as bodyguards, cannot be denied. The insane situation still provides many cosplay attractions to this day and even Leia actress Carrie Fisher was aware of the effect the scene had on young viewers.

The actress knew that the scene made her a sex icon. On the “Graham Norton Show” she talks about encounters with fans and warns Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey Skywalker, about what might be in store for her.

Master Yoda is a killer argument!

As if an alien not even 70 centimeters tall (or rather small) with pointy ears, three fingers on each hand, who jumps over his opponents like a rubber ball wasn’t sensational enough. What is much more astonishing is that this wise Jedi master did not manage to learn correct grammar in the 900 years he lived.

In the “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian,” viewers get to know “Baby Yoda,” who quickly becomes a fan favorite. The creature is called “Grogu” and is 53 years “old” in the series.

While Yoda died in the original trilogy, the story of Yoda’s species continues in “The Mandalorian.”

Of course, the music of “Star Trek” is also legendary. Alexander Courage created a theme that everyone knows. Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner and Michael Giacchino also contributed to making the music in the “Star Trek” universe unforgettable. But John Williams’ soundtrack to the “Star Wars” films is one of the, if not the most, the most famous film soundtrack of all time.

Han shoots first!

No matter who from the “Star Trek” universe takes on the charming smuggler Han Solo, he will lose. Because Han shoots first. Always! At least that was the case until George Lucas reworked the first “Star Wars” film, “Star Wars,” in the 90s. Since then, bounty hunter Greedo has shot first. However, fans around the world still agree: “Han shot first!” Even Trekkies can’t argue with that, sorry!

A shaggy Wookie is something that no Starfleet starship has ever had, but the Millennium Falcon even has Chewbacca as a co-pilot. Han Solo’s furry friend was largely responsible for the success of the film series. A character who was able to win over a huge crowd of fans without saying a word – try that, Star Trek!
