Everyone is talking about the new Bethesda game Starfield. Who hasn’t dreamed of a Skyrim-like game that allows us to seamlessly explore the cosmos and enjoy the unrestricted open world?
However, the open world is not as seamless as players would like it to be. One feature will not make it into the game: the smooth transition between space and planets. Fans had already feared that, for example in the forum Reset
Bethesda’s chief developer confirmed the absence Todd Howard im Interview mit IGN: »People have asked, ‘Can you take the spaceship directly down to the planet?’ no We decided early on that the surface is one reality and space is another.«
We have discussed here whether these numerous surfaces and planets will be a feast for modders or whether they will do more harm:

Well-known modders react with enthusiasm – and concern
This is how Howard justified the decision
According to Howard, it wasn’t worth the time and effort. He thinks it is »simply not that important for the players«
“So we’d rather be sure that it’s great on the surface, and it’s great in space, and that these realities look and play as good as they can be,” Howard said.
Other games such as No Man’s Sky, Elite: Dangerous and Star Citizen have shown what a smooth transition between space and planets can look like. However, these are all simulations, or at least have simulation approaches, while Starfield becomes a classic role-playing game. It remains to be seen how long the animation and the potential loading times will be.
