It was my own fault for being bitten by a mechanical tiger.
No wonder these deserted Paris suburban muddy streets are not even safe for me – Aegis, Marie Antoinette’s personal clockwork bodyguard – and I have a bag full of swords and a gun that fires ice bullets.
So when I was naively rounding dirty corners and being ambushed head-on by a clockwork lancer with all fours like Jack Skellington but no sense of humor, when a pair of mechanized big cats appeared behind me to complete the trap , I’m really surprised? That’s the MO of this kind of “punishment” game, isn’t it? You are invited to participate in the trial and then laugh at your mistakes.

Given the chance, French studio Spiders feels a bit like the game company we’d all create, making both dense, lore-driven RPGs and ambitious, feature-rich homages to their favorite games without A hint of cynicism.
After Bioware-a-like Greedfall, next comes the beloved Souls series, more specifically Steelrising, Bloodborne.
Saying something is “Dark Souls” has become a cliché, but Spider-Man has taken the unusual step of officially attaching the “Soul-like” genre label to Steelrising — something mid-level and large studios tend not to do.
Whether that’s for fear of being unfavorably compared and eclipsed by Real McCoy, or to avoid alienating casual players who may never have heard of the series, is a matter of opinion. But for those in the know, it pretty neatly sums up everything you can expect from Steelrising; dark fantasy, tough, optimistic enemies with powerful but strictly exploitable attack patterns, and a dense, interconnected world , dotted with checkpoints that bring bad guys back to life.
But while much of the gameplay is derived by design, one place Spiders has always provided is scene and background world building. Steelrising takes place in an alternate version of the French Revolution, where Clockwork King’s robot army controls the populace with a real iron fist.
You play as a masterpiece of equally oppressive technology, a Swatch watch battle droid in a French maid outfit, originally sent to find your creator and find out what really happened.
The “Clock Punk” setting works across a lot of levels, giving you the solid conceit of a character that’s almost infinitely upgradable and customizable, but mostly lets Spiders’ developers run wild on the enemy’s visual and mechanical (no pun intended) design .
Mechanical masterpiece or monster?
Not all Steelrising hordes of wandering machines in the universe were originally designed for combat. For every bipedal robot that uses conventional weapons, there may be something that should essentially be a lamp post, rigged by a jury to slam its solid metal brazier into whatever is stupid enough to walk on. things.
In a relatively short period of time, I’ve come across a lot of different (and to varying degrees of terrifying) machines, and the intricate gears and near-magical contraptions are sure to make myself the boss of some truly great Souls-style.
However, even if the enemies themselves have unique flourishes, how you turn them into scrap feels instantly familiar. The relatively slow-paced third-person action isn’t just from the core Souls series, but from across the pantheon, including other notable Souls-like games.
In addition to the more typical logos, there are grappling hooks and expanding shields from Sekiro, mid-air combos, and a mechanic that refreshes the entire bar by pressing the button when you run out of stamina – similar to their Nioh in Team Ninja in the series.
Lest you think I’m unfair, the obvious inspiration extends to world and quest design as well. You’ll continually unlock gates and shortcuts to checkpoints as you make your way through abandoned, degenerate Parisian streets like Arnhem. Plus, you can even find side quests to talk to and deliver items to Sims hiding behind closed doors.
It’s one of the silliest instances of things slipping completely into homage territory — only because it’s in Bloodborne — and it feels like it’s been heavily boosted without context.
Paris Medley
Still, despite the lack of ingenuity in many of its components, you can easily make a convincing argument that Steelrising’s innovation lies in bringing all these disparate elements together.
As you unlock more abilities, collect more weapons, and have more game systems at your disposal, the “we have blood at home” meme supermarket’s own brand, jank, quickly disappears, and Steelrising finds it a Intense tactical action game itself.
Once you’ve embraced the similarities and stopped wrestling with the differences, you’ll understand the whole reason why Spider-Man even makes something in the genre: Once the gears get stuck in the gears, the grinding, more combat loops are so overwhelming The payoff of convincing is the kind of game you can play, engrossed until the clock stops past 12.
At launch, though, balance will definitely be the key to extending Steelrising’s core philosophy throughout its runtime without getting bogged down in capricious and frustrating trial-and-error. However, the battle-tested rationale has almost been mentioned, it all comes down to execution and whether bugs and other janky gremlins are grinding in too many gears.
Steelrising will release on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on September 8, 2022. This is Spiders’ first game since it was acquired by French publisher Nacon (formerly Bigben Interactive).
