News culture Steven Spielberg has seen this 2023 sci-fi film three times, which only cost $15 million. Hollywood should take inspiration from this to get out of the crisis
The legendary Steven Spielberg would have loved the latest hit straight from Japan: Godzilla Minus One. The genius filmmaker had the opportunity to meet director Takashi Yamazaki and tell him how much he loved his film. Enough to give him ideas for a future project?
Summit meeting
After capturing the hearts of audiences around the world, Godzilla Minus may be preparing to stand out at Hollywood’s next Academy Awards. This means that the Japanese feature film is nominated in the “Best Special Effects” category, a nomination that has already excited the film teams and brought it a lot of attention.
On the sidelines of this 96th edition, the nominees had the opportunity to meet at the annual luncheon of the Academy of Oscars, organized recently. And on this occasion, Takashi Yamazaki, the director of Godzilla Minus One, was able to meet one of his idols: Steven Spielberg. The Japanese filmmaker shared a photo on Twitter/X, accompanied by a short text.
I met God
What should I do now?
cry
He also saw Godzilla three times.
They told me the characters were good.
He was also happy to receive a Godzilla figure… pic.twitter.com/WbJ30Oec7v— Takashi Yamazaki (@nostoro) February 13, 2024
I met God. What’s left for me to do now? I’m seriously crying. He told me that he had seen Godzilla three times and liked the characters. I gave him a Godzilla figurine and he kindly accepted it…
The recipe for a successful blockbuster
It’s easy to understand how excited Takashi Yamazaki was to meet Steven Spielberg, as the filmmaker influenced the Seventh Art. We also find explicit references to the film Jaws in Godzilla Minus One, an already successful blockbuster. Critics on the other side of the Atlantic were thrilled when the film hit theaters late last year, earning a 98% press and audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In France, the film was equally well received by the rare audience who had the opportunity to see Godzilla Minus One during its two limited theatrical releases: on AlloCiné, the film received a press rating of 3.9/5 and an audience rating of 4 ,2/5. A real critical success, but also commercially, as the feature film grossed more than $100 million at the international box office, despite the budget being estimated at less than $15 million. A real success that could give Hollywood a big boost as the American film industry continues to suffer commercial failures despite exorbitant budgets.
