Long-time RuneScape fans may have created private servers, but Jagex is finally allowing everyone to create official community servers.
The thing about MMOs is that, no matter what genre it is, eventually there will be some players who want to set up their own server. Maybe they just want to make grinding a little easier, or certain loot a little more attainable, or maybe they just hate other people, or even like other people so much that they want to fully participate in roleplaying with them. The point is, players like choice, especially in something like an MMO that’s a bit of a lifetime commitment type of deal – pick one, and that’s your fate. Since RuneScape is over 20 years old, the original version anyway, there have certainly been plenty of private servers during its existence, but Jagex has just announced Project Zanaris, “also known as old-school RuneScape community servers.”
“Community servers take the old-school RuneScape you know and love, and allow you to tweak different elements to create entirely new gameplay experiences,” Jagex explained in a blog post announcing the project. “Do you want NPCs to do 5x more damage? Do you want everyone to be Ultimate Iron Man, or turn on PvP everywhere? All of this and more will soon be possible. These servers are where you make the rules, and you get to choose who has access to your creations – whether that’s a small group of close friends, your tribe, or the entire community!”

The post doesn’t indicate that the project is still some time away from completion, and details won’t be released for “some time,” but there will be a Q&A on the official Old School RuneScape Discord server next week on September 12, so if you’re curious about what they’ll be like, that’ll be your best bet for learning more for the time being.
