The Nioh makers Team Ninja are trying out the Soulslike formula on a new brand, namely Final Fantasy.
Even before E3, there were leaks that pointed to a new action RPG related to Final Fantasy. The whole thing was officially announced yesterday on Square Enix’s E3 show: Team Ninja (including Ninja Gaiden, Nioh) are working on Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. The title is supposed to take a completely new approach within the long-lived series. Team Ninja is supported by the developers Tetsuya Nomura and Kazushige Nojima, who have a lot of Final Fantasy experience.
In the action role-playing game, you control the demon hunter Jack, who has made it his mission to defeat chaos. Together with his comrades Ash and Jed, he fights his way through a fantasy world in which many well-known monsters from the Final Fantasy universe are on their way. In the first trailer, the troupe gets to do with Garland, the antagonist from Final Fantasy I.
The closeness to the Nioh titles is actually shown in a playful way: Fast combos, magical attacks and nimble evasive maneuvers seem to make up the core of the combat system. Different jobs like black magician or dragoon allow Jack to use certain spells and abilities. He can also turn weakened enemies into crystals and then shatter them.
Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is due to be released in 2022 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S and PC. PS5 owners can already get a first impression of the game: A trial version can be downloaded and played until June 24th.
