A bug in the latest update to the PlayStation 5 has caused unrest among players in the last few days.
This is what happened: A firmware update for the PS5 showed some players displaying advertisements instead of high-resolution images of the selected game when selecting installed games.
Affected players saw advertisements for new games as well as, sometimes outdated, news largely in the background.
For example, Star Wars Day was promoted in the background when Star Wars Battlefront II was selected. This day traditionally takes place on May 4th of each year.
Not all players and all games were affected. Depending on the game installed, it could happen that no advertising was displayed.

PS5 forecast: Are price hammers and game flops really that bad?
There was no way to turn off the advertising. Only the separation of the PlayStation 5 from the Internet stopped the display of advertising.

The games affected included Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Space Marines II and Final Fantasy VII.
Sony has now fixed the error
Sony admitted on Monday that the change was a mistake. Yesterday Sony confirmed this again on an official X account.

Translated:
»A technical error in the official messaging function on the PS5 console has now been fixed. “Nothing has changed in the way game news is displayed on the PS5.”
The regular backgrounds should be visible again for all players.
