The superhero team has reached the end of its journey: Marvel’s Avengers will receive its final update later this year and already am 30. September the action-adventure with the Marvel superheroes will no longer be sold. A bitter, if not completely surprising message, the development studio Crystal Dynamics on January 20th via blog entry announced.
The sale ends in September
The experienced studio’s action-adventure never really got both feet on the ground. When it was released in September 2020, the game was received with extremely mixed feelings. There was actually a fun experience somewhere in this game, but lax service with lots of playful repetition kept Marvel’s Avengers from generating enthusiasm despite the powerful license. In our test, too, we were more disappointed than carried away:

Marvel’s Avengers – Superhero Action Game Review Video
The overwhelming reaction was then quickly reflected in the players. On Steam, the adventure crashed from initially 30,000 players to a few thousand within a few days. In the months that followed, it became fewer and fewer, until finally only a few hundred remained active. Sure, numbers from other platforms like Xbox Game Pass and consoles are missing here, but for such a large-scale produced Triple-A project, such numbers are a disaster. Especially when a game, like Avengers, comes with an extensive service model that should keep it alive for years.
Now the team pulls the ripcord in consultation with all partners. Nice the last update 2.8 should appear in March, which mainly adjusts the balance again and, above all, prepares the game for the end of its support. There is no more new content, so the Winter Soldier from Update 2.7 remains the last addition.
Incidentally, it is not uncommon for even large AAA projects such as Avengers to fail because of the service requirements. In the podcast we talked about the crisis in service games.

What does the future of Marvel’s Avengers look like?
Here is a quick overview of the most important processes up to the end of Marvel’s Avengers:
- March 31, 2023: Patch 2.8, the last update, will be released on this day.
- 30. September 2023: Three years after release, digital and retail sales will be halted and all support from Crystal Dynamics will cease.
What does that mean for active players and those who might still be planning to do a few rounds with Iron Man and Co.? Marvel’s Avengers will not disappear completely for the time being
If you have purchased the game, it will also remain available. You can still start in single player and compete with friends in co-op. However, Crystal Dynamics warns that unforeseeable circumstances
could occur that eventually make the game unplayable. In any case, it is no longer supported.
What about microtransactions made? Once the final patch is released, you will no longer be able to spend real money in Marvel’s Avengers. All cosmetic shop content will be free. If you have any remaining credits, the Marvel’s Avengers in-game currency, then this money will be converted into in-game resources. This table shows how much you get:
