As part of its latest financial report, the Polish developer people can fly An update on the development was announced Project Dagger. as with take two.
The developer has now revealed that it is parting ways with Take-Two, leaving some options on how to proceed.
According to People Can Fly’s announcement, Take-Two shared his intent to end the relationship in a letter to the studio. GTA Publishers has been funding the project since its inception, with People Can Fly’s New York team spearheading development.
Terms of the settlement were not disclosed, as it appears that no decision has been made. However, People Can Fly said it needs to repay the development advances that Take-Two has received since 2020. The Polish developer explained that the exact details will be determined based on the game’s business model.
For now, People Can Fly can choose to self-publish the game, or seek help from other publishers. Interestingly, Take-Two did not exercise the option to purchase the intellectual property, meaning the studio retained those rights and is now their sole owner.
The studio added that it was “determined to develop the project on its own”.
PCF chief executive Sebastian Wojciechowski said: “I think we’ll break up on good terms and I don’t see why we can’t work with Take-Two on some other projects in the future.”
“We strongly believe in the potential of Project Dagger and are now committed to continuing development in our self-publishing pipeline. The game is still in pre-production – our team is now focused on closing the combat and game loop and migrating from UE4 to UE5. I Realize that this decision will increase investment in us, but self-publishing is part of our strategy. Of course, we do not rule out partnering with new publishers if this creates a compelling business opportunity.”
According to the press release, Project Dagger is one of seven projects currently in development at various People Can Fly studios. One of them — Project Gemini — was funded by Square Enix. A few other projects will be self-funded, but PCF is working with publishing partners on two VR games.
It’s the latest in a string of bad news from the Polish group, which revealed last year that it didn’t receive any royalties from the Outriders’ work. The royalties are paid out of the game’s revenue after the development budget is recovered, suggesting that the sci-fi shooter RPG has yet to break even.
People Can Fly’s strategy relies on releasing one game a year, so expect to hear about the studio’s next game in the near future.
