In the United States, the national dolphin day is celebrated annually in April to honor the importance of dolphins in nature. On this occasion, Google, together with researchers from the Georgie Institute of Technology and the field research team of the Wild Dolphin Project (WDP), trained an extensive voice model (LLM) called Dolphingemma, such as the portal AndroidCentral reported. This voice model is intended to support more scientists in researching the communication of dolphins.
In the future, Dolphingemma could possibly decrypt the communication of dolphins and find out what they say – at least the researchers hope for that. The focus of the Wild Dolphin Project is on the observation and analysis of communication and social interactions of dolphins. For example, the researchers were able to find a connection between certain sounds and the behavior of the dolphins.
AI should be able to recognize noise patterns
The AI language model Dolphingemma is based on Google's open source model GEMMA and is able to process received audio data. This is what the WDP scientists take advantage of by supplying the numerous acoustic data of dolphins that have been collected. The goal is to be able to better interpret the dolphins.
The AI then searches for patterns in these noises and tries to understand it. After Dolphingemma understood this pattern, tries to predict the next according to the dolphin. The processing of such complex patterns is associated with a lot of time. With the help of Dolphingemma, recognizing these patterns for scientists should be facilitated in the future.
