it does look like Tekken 8 The future of this fighting game is bright, with sales exceeding 2 million copies in its first month of release.

Tekken 8 is the first new mainline entry in the long-running fighting series in nearly a decade, so it has a lot to look forward to. Thankfully, it turned out to be pretty good, and the proven quality translated into some strong sales figures. Earlier today, Bandai Namco announced that the game has sold 2 million copies in the month since its launch. The press release reads: “Sales exceeded 2 million copies in the first month of release, greatly surpassing the still-playing predecessor “Tekken 7″ and setting a record for the series with total sales of more than 11.8 million copies worldwide.” on the news.

For context, Tekken 7 has sold just 2 million copies more than two years after launch, so honestly the sequel “significantly surpasses its predecessor” is a bit of an understatement. It’s hard to say why Tekken 8 is selling so much faster than Tekken 7, but it’s certainly partly because more people are playing the game than ever before, and a lot of it is because of the COVID-19 lockdown. With a start like this, Tekken 8 does look poised to eclipse Tekken 7’s lifetime sales record, although it’ll obviously be a while before we get there.

It also appears to be shipping at the same pace as fighting game giant Street Fighter 6, which also sold 2 million copies in the same time frame. In fact, Tekken 7 ended up outselling Street Fighter 5, but it now appears that the two classic series may end up seeing similar numbers depending on how successful they are with post-launch content.

However, Tekken 8 players are somewhat frustrated by the game’s plans to add paid cosmetics that were not available at launch.
