In 2022, many will still use Telekom Mail, T-Online’s email service. Simplicity and data protection are strong arguments, but our test shows that there is more to it.
Telekom Mail in the test
320 reviews
Uncomplicated freemailer with a high security factor
Telekom’s free Freemail offer impressed us in our test with its user-friendly interface as well as a lot of security and data protection. Only the email storage limit of 1 GB could limit eager users in the long term. If necessary, you can upgrade to the relatively inexpensive Mail M version. Telekom Mail does not offer any extensive additional services beyond the calendar and address book, but it fulfills the central tasks of an email service with flying colors.
We liked that
- clear user interface
- generous limit for attachments
- Cloud connection
- high level of data protection
- high security
- Mail S benefits for customers with a Telekom connection
We didn’t like that
- Little email storage for free users
- few additional functions
- cumbersome device synchronization with Sync-Plus

Conclusion
Telekom has been operating one of the most successful email services in Germany for almost 30 years. At that time it was still called T-Online Freemail, today it goes under the name Telekom Mail. But while the email service had little competition back then, today many email providers are vying for customers’ favor. Is Telekom Mail still at the forefront today?
Telekom Mail: Three packages, two of them free
In addition to a free free mailer (Telekom Freemail), the email provider has also been offering you an optional, paid subscription called Telekom Mail M (2.95 dollars per month) for some time, which adds some functions and offers various advantages. There is also Telekom Mail S, an advertising-reduced mailbox for Telekom connection customers at no additional cost.
With Telekom’s free email inbox you get 1 gigabyte of storage, as does the aforementioned Mail S subscription, which Telekom customers use for free. Only the paid Mail M subscription offers 15 gigabytes more storage and you can even expand it by one gigabyte per month if necessary. But the three email packages also differ significantly in other ways.

Telekom email packages in comparison
In addition, you can book storage space for the MagentaCloud online storage with all packages – 3 GB for Freemail, 15 GB if you are a customer with a Telekom connection. Telekom Mail S also has reduced advertising compared to Freemail, Mail M is completely ad-free and offers you configurable spam protection. MagentaZuhause customers also receive 50 SMS and 5 MMS with the Mail M subscription.
Login and operation: No-frills message center
Managing and sending emails is quick and easy at Telekom, the website in the well-known corporate design works very quickly, and menus are clearly integrated on the left side. There you will also find the spam area, your trash and drafts of your emails.
You can ensure more order by storing your emails in individual folders. You can also easily create these using the menu on the right. You are also offered a separate area for your photos, in which all photo followers from your email history are displayed individually. You can limit the storage period for your emails to 3, 14, 30 and 90 days, but you can also save them indefinitely.
Unfortunately, there is no dedicated page for login; instead, a detour via the rather overloaded portal t-online.de in the browser is necessary. Alternatively, you can use the Telekom Mail app.
It is almost identical to the browser version and available for both iOS and Android. A third way to access your emails is via standard email programs such as Outlook.
Further functions of Telekom Mail
Sync-Plus is included in all three Telekom email packages. This means your emails, contacts and appointments are automatically synchronized between different devices. You use the Sync Plus app for this on mobile devices and PCs. Other email services usually have more convenient synchronization options for this. At Telekom the process is comparatively complex.

Whether you use Freemail, Mail S or Mail M, you can always choose whether you want to create the email addresses included in the package with the ending @t-online or @magenta.de.
There are other applications connected to your email account, which you can access via the menu button in the top left corner of the screen. This includes an address book, a calendar and eCards. The latter is a selection of pre-made, digital greeting cards that you can send by email. You can also find a link to MagentaCloud in the menu mentioned.
Manage emails on your PC and smartphone
Set up and manage email service
Depending on which email service you have, you have to take other things into account when setting it up, managing it and using it. In this guide we answer the most important questions.
T-Online: Secure email traffic
At Telekom, data is transmitted encrypted (SSL standard) between your devices and the company’s servers. If you use the Telekom Mail app, you should make sure that SSL encryption is activated in the software settings.
The Telekom Mail app and the browser version of the email service have automatic spam and virus protection in common. It also works extremely reliably against most threats. In our test, suspicious emails were almost always filed in the spam area, but our normal mailbox was not completely spared from advertising emails.
Data protection par excellence
Did you know that Telekom is a founding member of the “E-Mail made in Germany” initiative, which, together with other services such as GMX, Web.de, 1&1 and Strato, is committed to complying with various data guidelines. This includes encrypted data transmission as well as the processing and storage of all data on exclusively German servers.
Conveniently, email services that are part of this initiative will also be highlighted accordingly in your Telekom inbox. If you are afraid that your account has been hacked, Telekom offers you the option to change your password at any time.
Since Telekom only saves data in German data centers, you as a user benefit from the restrictive German data protection legislation. According to the provider, customer data is not stored for advertising purposes; neither customer nor contract data is passed on to its own marketer Interactive Media, which is also responsible for placing personalized advertising. Electronic mail is scanned for security reasons, but not for advertising purposes.
Telekom customer center: Broad support for your problems
If you have problems with your Telekom email account, we have a wide range of support available. In addition to a forum where users can ask their questions, you can also contact us via the following channels Contact Telekom directly:
- Telekom Live-Chat
- Telekom contact form
- Telekom hotline
- Telekom shop near you
Malfunctions with Telekom Mail are rare
Both Telekom’s servers and T-Online’s servers rarely have to deal with disruptions compared to other email providers. Vodafone, for example, performs significantly worse in this area. Occasional email server failures do occur from time to time, but they are usually resolved quickly.
