news culture Terrible disappointment for Avatar 2. One of the most expensive films in history takes a big hit
Avatar: The Way of the Water is an undeniable commercial success, but it didn’t make such a strong impression at the Oscars.
THE 95th Academy Awards Seen everything successfully everywhere at once. But Avatar: The Waterway, on the other hand, was a little less successful despite its phenomenal budget and box office.
Summary
- 3rd highest box office, 6th highest budget…
- …but “only” four Oscar nominations…
- … and only one reward, the most obvious!
3rd highest box office, 6th highest budget…
Avatar: The Way of the Water is already the third highest grossing worldwide
…but “only” four Oscar nominations…
As a matter of fact, Avatar was nominated in nine categories at the 2010 Oscars : Best Film, Best Director, Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Sound Editing, Best Score, Best Art Direction, Best Chorography and Best Visual Effects. The movie had won the last three categories thus citing and rewarding its visual artists (with the notable exception of director James Cameron). This year, James Cameron was not present at the Oscarsand with good reason…his film wasn’t with the name “that” in four categories. Of course, it’s an honor for any film to be nominated in a category at the Oscars, but If you invest at least 350 million dollars in a film, you clearly want to be the film of the year. Both in the theatre, in the press and at award ceremonies. On that last point Unfortunately, we cannot say that this was the case with Avatar 2.
… and only one reward, the most obvious!
Nominated in the categories Best Film, Best Sound, Best Sets (formerly Best Art Direction), and best visual effectsAvatar: The Waterway only won one, and that was clearly the most obvious. It was beaten in the Best Picture category Everything everywhere at once. It is Top Gun: Maverick which won the Oscar for best audio. Awarded the Best Decor category Nothing is new in the westdistributed by Netflix. Unsurprisingly, Avatar: The Way of the Water won the Oscar for Best Visual Effectsbefore In the West, Nothing New, The Batman, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Top Gun: Maverick. Joe Letteri and Richard Baneham win another Oscar for their visual effects in an Avatar filmwhile Eric Saindon and Daniel Barrett win their first gold statuette. James Cameron has therefore made two films in the top 3 at the box office historical, but it is always with Titanic, 4th in the rankings for winning his only Oscars.
Avatar: The Way of the Water is still showing in many cinemas in France.
