It was a particularly anticipated announcement for PS5 players, the rumor had been circulating for many months. This time it’s done: a big State of Play will take place this month.
The rumors have been more and more insistent in recent weeks. The impatience of PS5 players grew in the face of a catalog for this second half that was unfortunately vague, especially after the release of Stellar Blade. Summer seemed ideal to dispel this cloud of uncertainty and make way for large-scale communication on future exclusives, but also on PlayStation’s medium-long-term strategy. Sony had confirmed in its financial report the imminent holding of a major event, all hopes were then placed on a PlayStation Showcase. This time it’s official, it will finally be an important State of Play that will be broadcast this month.
Status confirmed in May 2024
It was a highly anticipated speech. PS5 players have been hoping for a PlayStation Showcase to air for months. The annual event, which is much larger in scope than a simple State of Play, always has its share of much more interesting announcements than usual. The rumors have become more and more persistent in recent months: Sony was expected to hold its conference again in May to shed light on the PS5’s future portfolio. It almost didn’t fail: it won’t be a PS Showcase, but a State of Play, like last year.
Appointments are therefore made under Thursday, May 30, 2024, 11:59 p.m.
What can we expect given this state of affairs?
This is the question on everyone’s lips. What will be shown during this State of Play? At the moment, Sony hasn’t confirmed much, except that PlayStation Studios productions will be shown and that partner publishers will also come and host the show. In half an hour, this State of Play could still be the scene of surprising announcements. We’re taking stock of what won’t be shown and what probably will be.
The return of previously announced PS5 exclusives?
You should of course expect to hear news about g ames already confirmed. The PS5 exclusive Death Stranding 2 obviously seems ideal, at least if Hideo Kojima does not reserve his next talk for his great friend Geoff Keighley at Summer Game Fest 2024. No hope, however, for Marvel’s Wolverine, the next big cartridge of the PS5 . After the data theft of which Insomniac was a victim, the studio is waiting for the right moment to take revenge by officially showing its next game, but according to him, it will not happen immediately. On the other hand, the chances of seeing DLC for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 are more than likely.
On the exclusive side, the FPS Concord is almost securedwhose release was recently confirmed for this year, just like the famous Remake of Until Dawn under the direction of the British studio Ballistic Moon. The competitive heist game Fairgame$created by the new studio of Jade Raymond (Assassin’s Creed), could also try to pull off a heist during the State of Play.
An update on rumors and leaks surrounding PlayStation Studios
Then there are those games that we half-know exist but know nothing about. Naughty Dog is reportedly working on a brand new license that is rumored to be either sci-fi or fantasy-oriented, while Cory Barlog and part of Santa Monica Studio have also been working on a new franchise for several years. PlayStation will surely be waiting for another opportunity to give us a little taste of what they’re preparing. The same goes for the official release of Ghost of Tsushima 2, we’ll probably have to wait until a PS Showcase.
For its part, Bend Studio is working on a new open-world game that will not be a sequel to Days Gone. Then there is the case of Bluepoint. Players are praying that the remake specialist will update Bloodborne on PS5, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. This is actually the first time the studio is working on a new license, but it’s also more likely that you’ll see it during a PlayStation Showcase than a State of Play. As for rumors, it’s also rumored that a MediEvil 2 Remake and a Gravity Rush 2 Remastered could be announced soon, but given the reliability of the sources, we are not assuming too much.
On the other hand, there are two games that we are almost certain to see at this point. First, Tom Henderson notes that a certain LEGO Horizon is about to be revealed. This state of affairs seems ideal, just like for a reveal of the fruits of the efforts of the small team Asobi, which is working on a new exclusive PS5. Serious leaks suggest that a Platform game Astro Bot full-fledged and non-VR, which would be announced within two weeks. We are not painting you a picture…
Silent Hill 2, FF9 Remake … big announcements expected from third-party publishers
Partner publishers should also attract attention. Silent Hill 2 is on track to finally announce its release date, which has been announced several times in recent weeks by the various classification organizations. Unless Konami reserves this announcement during its own showcase, which will take place immediately after this state of affairs. It remains to be seen whether the publisher will also bring a certain Metal Gear Solid 3 Also. Square Enix, the historical partner of Sony, despite its desire to say goodbye to exclusive contracts, could have some announcements in its pocket. Maybe we will finally know the announcement of the famous FF9 remake or a FF Tactics remaster via the Nvidia leak? At this point, an appearance of Dragon Quest 3 HD seemed more likely if the game would even be finished this year.
As for the already announced and promising productions, Phantom Blade Zero could take us back to its feudal fantasy China. As with previous editions, the independent indie scene will also have a small spotlight at this State of Play.
More surprises, but no PS5 Pro
You should also expect all kinds of surprises. On this occasion, new PC ports could be revealed and God of War Ragnarok would succeed the recently released Ghost of Tsushima. On the other hand, Sony is expected to turn things around, especially on the hardware side. It’s an open secret by now, the manufacturer will launch its PS5 Pro later this year. A more powerful console that could use in-house technology and AI to improve graphics and then display a higher frame rate. Will it be announced at State of Play? It seems more logical that Sony would wait until the PlayStation Showcase to make this announcement, so don’t dream too much.
