Last year, Krafton’s PUBG makers secured the licensing rights to the fantasy novel The Bird That Drinks Tears. On this basis, work has now started on a new fantasy epic.
Today, Krafton officially announced in a press release that active development of Project Windless has begun. The otherwise nameless game is based on the popular Korean fantasy novel “The Bird That Drinks Tears”, for which the corresponding license rights were secured in 2021. Since then, the planning for Project Windless has been in full swing.
So now the development studio is going one step further and is starting to actively work on the actual game; the pure conception phase has been left insofar. For the further progress of the work, the search for developer talents continues, in order to realize what they say is an “ambitious vision”.
“The Bird That Drinks Tears” is a novel series written by Yeong-do Lee, the pioneer of the Korean fantasy genre. Lee is considered one of Korea’s most widely read fantasy authors, with books selling millions. Above all, the sophisticated world and its complex characters are praised.
For the implementation of the game, Krafton brought Hollywood talent Iain McCaig on board, among others; The concept artist, who previously worked on The Avengers, Harry Potter and The Terminator, is set to bring Lee’s novel to life. His work also includes early character visualizations from “Star Wars”.
In line with the announcement, at least new concept images were shown, which should give you an impression of what to expect. It also shows the first interpretations of the four different peoples of the novel: humans, Rekkon, Tokebi and Nhaga.
At first, Krafton did not name a release date and platforms for the fantasy epic. We will keep you up to date!
