It’s been less than a month since Borderlands was released in theaters, and Lionsgate has already confirmed that it will be releasing it digitally this week.
The Borderlands movie is not what I or anyone else would consider a good movie. In fact, I would say it is downright terrible, which I did in my review of the film, and as expected, the video game adaptation tanked at the box office, debuting to $16 million on a $115 million budget, which is, to put it bluntly, terrible. Apparently, this result did not please Lionsgate either, because yesterday, the production company announced that the premium video and on-demand versions of the film will be available later this week, August 30th. As a reminder, the film only came out on August 9th, which means it will be available to watch on digital platforms three weeks after its release.

You can buy the movie for $25, or rent it for 48 hours for $20. Obviously, buying is the better deal of the two, but if you ask me, I’d recommend not doing either of those things and waiting until it’s finally available on a streaming service so you can say “Oh, Borderlands is now on Netflix,” quickly scroll through all the other shows and movies, decide you don’t want to watch it, and go back to Twitter. It’s still a much better use of your time.
At least, it’s good news for fans of video games. Last week, during the Gamescom Opening Night Live stream, 2K and Gearbox Software finally revealed that they were working on Borderlands 4, even though they didn’t show a whole lot. It was a classic “yes, it’s real!” trailer, even though Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford had hinted at its existence before, so we all knew it was coming. Still, it’s better than nothing, and for Gearbox’s sake, you better hope the game is good enough for the few people who saw it to forget about it.
