In our podcast about the most important MMOs in 2021 colleague Leya from MeinMMO doesn’t have New World, but Lost Ark named the most exciting online role-playing game of the year. Lost Ark has missed this time frame – the EU version will not appear until 2022 – but Leya was right in terms of content.
Because as we now know from the closed beta, Lost Ark is actually a very promising MMO – albeit with some drawbacks.
Natalie, Micha and Mary all played Lost Ark in the beta and slaughtered their way through quests and dungeons. However, with very different expectations. For Micha and Natalie, Lost Ark is so exciting because it playfully reminds of hack and slays like Diablo 3 and Path of Exile: In the top view we knock our way through hordes of monsters.

Mary didn’t like Diablo, but loves MMOs like Final Fantasy 14 and World of Warcraft. The MMO aspects of Lost Ark are therefore most interesting for them: How well do teamwork and group content work, for example?
Of course we can only draw an interim conclusion after the beta, there was not enough time to deal in depth with the endgame. But this conclusion is cautiously positive.
Lost Ark clearly has weaknesses in terms of story, quest design (if we still have to carry a stone!) And interface. The actual gameplay, however, unfolds its force, the dungeons are great, and a lot of reward and upgrade mechanisms await in the endgame, including your own fortress and your own ship.
Lost Ark missed the title of the most exciting MMO in 2021. But it could be enough for the most exciting MMO in 2022 – at least if Amazon Pay2Win circumnavigates the shallows.
