Zelda Tears of the Kingdom is one of the best games of 2023, so fans want more, but beware of disappointment. Eiji Aonuma reconfirms the bad news.
In a month and a half, Zelda Tears of the Kingdom has already sold more than 20 million units worldwide. With performances like these, even if the game hasn’t seen its first Christmas yet, you can speak of a real phenomenon. This is a historical record for the saga, which will significantly surpass that of The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild with “only” 30 million copies sold, more than five years after its release. A huge success that will influence the next episode?
A suite of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom 2 for Switch 2?
The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom isn’t the GOTY of 2023, but it was still voted “Best Action-Adventure Game” at the 2023 Game Awards. Another great recognition after convincing millions of people. Players who probably wouldn’t say no to a direct sequel. But is it possible? According to producer Eiji Aonuma, who was interviewed by Game Informer, it’s forgettable. Everything has been said and in this context it would be complicated to do it “A sequel to a sequel”.
(Laughs) Well… it would be a sequel to a sequel, which would be kind of crazy if you think about it. As I’ve said in the past, our goal with Zelda Tears of the Kingdom was to build on the world we created with Breath of the Wild. And we really wanted to take advantage of all the possibilities that this world offers. It’s something of an apotheosis. From the final form of this version of The Legend of Zelda. So I don’t think we’re going to do a direct continuation of the world we created in this case.
Over Game Informer.
Aonuma-san and director Hidemaro Fujibayashi had already made very similar comments recently. So there will be no The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom 2 and the next game could surprise.
A new game and a live-action film are in the works
No Zelda Tears of the Kingdom 2 a priori, but at least one DLC or expansion? Not even. Nintendo teams have already moved on. “We don’t plan on releasing any additional content this time because we feel like we’ve done everything we could with the world of this game and how it plays.”
We can’t be sure what direction the next Zelda game will take, but there could be big changes. Theories anticipate a new era, a new empire or a different temporality. So many titles that would therefore not be compatible with a TOTK 2. In addition to this title, Big N has validated the construction of a live-action Zelda film. An adaptation entrusted to Wes Ball (The Labyrinth trilogy) and Joe Hartwick Jr. In production we will find another Japanese company, a competitor of Nintendo in video games: Sony. There’s no word on casting yet, but Hunter Schafer, Jules in the Euphoria series, is available for the role of Princess Zelda, if at all.
