news culture The future of One Piece in jeopardy? The health of the author is still worrying
Behind every manga legend there is often a tired mangaka. One Piece is no exception to the rule, as evidenced by the hellish program that Eiichiro Oda follows. Something we’ll get back to after the hiatus that was taken this week following the airing of Chapter #1079.
Eiichiro Oda: the hell of a schedule
Without a doubt, One Piece is one of the most enduring and widely distributed works of literature in recent years. 105 volumes were published in Japan while 1079 chapters were published in the journal Weekly Shônen Jump, which captivate Japanese readers. A tension that is more and more maintained by the regular pauses of Eiichiro Oda, the mangaka at the origin of One Piece. The newest? This week as the long awaited Chapter #1080 is not expected until Sunday April 9th. Truces that allow the author to catch his breath, who has a hell of a schedule to draw his panels.
A program that leaves him little time for entertainment or even for sleeping. According to their own statements, One Piece fans know that they have been suffering from health problems for several years. In a 2016 interview, he said he slept an average of three hours a night and had diabetes.. A lack that not only affects sleep but also food, which he mentioned during his cross-interview with Gosho Aoyama, the mangaka behind it Detective Conan (102 volumes in Japan):
When it comes to mangakas, there are those who lose weight and those who gain weight. When I started the series, I started gaining weight. I often didn’t eat for 2 or 3 days and didn’t even have time to eat because it made me feel sleepy.
Problems that he has become more and more aware of over the years. As he approaches fifty, he finds that drawing fights becomes increasingly difficult: something Oda mentions when discussing one of Luffy’s big duels.
Concerned fans
A declining health observed in history One piece. Some islands like Punk Hazard or Dressrosa are the product of a fusion of two concepts (fire and ice, passion and dolls). Something that will allow him to speed up the processing of his manga while also addressing the things he still wants to show. In addition, those who have read the final chapter of One Piece can deduce from the final battle Eiichiro Oda’s desire to hurry up in the drawing, he who announced last year that the manga would enter its “Saga Finale
Wow, I admire the guy. I hope he’s fine.
Unfortunately, this could mean that One Piece should end soon, say 2024, so Oda can write the ending with np and then get some well-deserved rest.— João C. (@joaocebada) March 28, 2023

There are many examples of famous mangaka getting hurt or even worse hurt because of their investment in manga: Togashi Yoshihiro (Hunter Hunter), Kentaro Miura (Berserk) or more recently Kohei Horikoshi (My Hero Academia). So there’s an element of empathy and admiration for readers who don’t want to see the creator of their favorite manga wither and probably want to prolong the dream for as long as possible.
