“Mercedes G 580 with EQ technology” – the now electrified off-road vehicle icon is hidden behind this unwieldy name. It has less payload than a VW Polo, but tricks like the G-Turn.
- Mercedes-Benz has officially presented the “G 580 with EQ technology” model.
- The “EQG”, which was presented in 2021, will therefore become reality.
- Thanks to the ladder frame and high off-road mobility, the off-road capabilities are essentially retained and in some cases even improved.
- But newfangled tricks like the “G-Turn” are also added.
- The vehicle, which weighs over 3 tons, has a payload of just 415 kilograms.
Weighing 3,085 kilograms, the electric G-Class from Mercedes-Benz is only 20 kilograms lighter than the longer Tesla Cybertruck. Four engines together produce 432 kW/588 hp with a maximum torque of 1,164 Newton meters. You have to let these values sink in when you approach the newly launched off-road vehicle icon, which was first announced in autumn 2021.
Mercedes-Benz decided to make the “G”, which is now over 40 years old, fit for the future with a modern drive and not – like the Land Rover Defender – to introduce a completely new car.
You can see the many ancestors of the G 580 with EQ technology, which cannot be called EQG, when you look at the LED headlight face. The loyal customers will definitely like this.

A prominent G-driver is Arnold Schwarzenegger, who electrified his G-Class years ago on his own. The future buyers should be well-off, after all Stuttgart is talking about a price of around 200,000 dollars. The G-Class was never cheap.
The G-Class is only a limited long-distance vehicle. The 110 kilowatt hour battery is offset by the immense weight and a sub-optimal drag coefficient. The manufacturer promises a range of more than 400 kilometers. From a standstill, the jump to 100 km/h should be possible in under five seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h. Charging is possible with a maximum of 200 kW, if available.
Even though the G-Class has always been an extremely capable off-road vehicle, in the latest versions you never really see it in the dirt, but rather on the boulevards and big cities of the world. But as with the popular off-road campers, the principle applies: you could if you wanted. And how!
The electric drive does not hinder the off-road capability of the SUV, which is still based on a ladder frame. On the contrary. Compared to the combustion engine version, the fording ability has increased by 15 centimeters to 85 centimeters. There are also “tricks” such as the ability to turn on the spot. The pun was obvious and is already used by Mercedes: It’s the “G-Turn”, which you can see here in the video.
Price and availability
At market launch, the electric G-Class will be available as a special model called “Edition One”. Interested parties can choose from the colors Manufaktur Südseeblau magno”, “Obsidian black metallic”, “Manufaktur Opalithweiß magno”, “Manufaktur Opalithweiß bright” and “Manufaktur Classicgrau uni”.
This Special model will be available at a price of at least 192,500 dollars from the second half of 2024. The normal G 580 is available starting at around 50,000 dollars cheaper, at a price of 142,600 dollars. You can read more news from the field of electromobility here. There are further innovations to be announced at the motor show in Beijing (April 25th to May 5th). Opel, for example, presented the electric Grandland, which features details worth seeing.
