The Dark Knight will return to Batman Caped Crusader in an animated series directed by the creator of the original series. A SVOD giant has acquired the rights.
After all, it’s not all bad news for DC’s future in cinemas and on the small screen, although we’ll continue to mourn Henry Cavill’s absence from Superman Legacy. A very, very promising Batman project was saved by a huge SVOD. And no, it’s not Netflix, it’s another actor who has the fangs.
Batman Caped Crusader on Amazon? Disney+? AppleTV+?
If you haven’t been following the case, Batman Caped Crusader is a new animated series developed by Bruce Timm. The extremely talented creator behind the (memorable) animated series from 1992. A project that directors JJ Abrams (Lost, star wars 7 & L’Ascension de Skywalker…) and Matt Reeves (The Batman, cloverfield…) are connected. A team joined for the scenario by Ed Brubaker, who has written several comics about Gotham’s vigilantes.
Attractive on paper, except for Warner who, due to the turmoil, decided to drop this new series. A show that should have ended up on HBO Max. However, that didn’t stop the creators of Batman Caped Crusader from speaking to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+ to save their baby at all costs. After tough negotiations, it was Amazon Prime Video that, according to those very well informed, won the jackpot The Hollywood Reporter
And the SVOD giant doesn’t do things by halves, because it has ordered two seasons straight away. Season 1 with 10 episodes. Amazon and Warner, a rolling business? Sounds like HBO content like e.g peacemaker
The Dark Knight and his enemies watch over Hollywood
If other DC characters like Lobo should be introduced gradually, Batou will still be a big star. Filmmaker Matt Reeves has a hand in The Batman 2, but it’s just one project among many. The director has indeed given his BatVerse carte blanche and already has plans to make films about the bad guys of Gotham alongside The Penguin series.
